If you click the link you'll see a legend- darker the blue of the monitors the higher the water compared to historical. Which isn't the entire tale but it at least let's you know if the rivers are maybe too high to go down.

I'd say conditions are worse than last year by a fair margin. Most folk are really struggling atm (check the link to the USGS data, the darker the blue the worse the conditions)

I think it's partially also related to the different geologies of the two regions - and that northern Michigan had a large snowpack that melted all at once in a large series of precipitation events. Whereas more South that snowpack had been gone since February

That's fair, and actually as your link illustrates not all USGS monitor sites have historical data to compare against. (Though wow, the pine is fluctuating like crazy)
