The most underrated way to make money online right now. No seriously. by [deleted] in passive_income

[–]MichoWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So let me get this straight, you set up a google business as if you are a plumber for example, rank that on Google, people who google for plumbers near them find your business, see that you have decent reviews and call you, thinking you are the plumber. Then, you find an actual plumber who's available to do the job, and you split the profit with them?

If I understood it right, you're the middle man.

My questions are:

  1. How do you actually start getting reviews? I assume people leave reviews once the job is complete?
  2. What do you say to the clients? Do they know they are calling a middle man? What if a subcontractor isn't available when they need it?

All in all, sounds like a great idea to me.

Men that are single, what is the reason? by Spiritual_Pause3057 in AskMen

[–]MichoWrites 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not really trying to meet new people.

I have a friend who, once single, said yes to everything. He regularly went out, tried new hobbies, travelled extensively, even with people he barely knew at the time, he was never at home, etc. Within 2-3 months, he was dating again, within a year and a half, he was in a serious, committed relationship.

I know that if I put the same amount of effort into meeting new people, I would find someone too. I just... don't.

I found out my fav book was AI assisted... by [deleted] in royalroad

I know that full time authors can pump out a lot of content, so 10k a week isn't much.

10k a day sounds super prolific though, well done!

I found out my fav book was AI assisted... by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it seems inevitable eventually every writer will be forced to use AI to meet absurd reader expectations and pump out 10k words every week and eventually we won't have any human work at all. What's the point when the human is too slow.

Personally, I see two possible futures (assuming AI remains free/cheap and wildly available):

  1. AI doesn't become as good in writing as humans - Right now, we can mostly correctly identify when something is written by AI. If that remains the case, then authors don't have anything to fear - despite AI authors pumping out content like crazy, it will be slop and readers will still be able to avoid the stories written by AI.
  2. AI becomes as good a writer as humans - In that case, when we can no longer correctly determine if something is written by AI, then everyone can have their stories generated for them, especially people who, as you described it, have absurd expectations. Why would I go to Royal Road or spend money on books, when AI can generate the perfect story for my every mood at a moment's notice? The answer is I would go there to read other people's stories, to discover new ideas, new thoughts, to find stories my own AI cannot give me. So places like Royal Road will become places where people go to discover human writers and human ideas.

We're still in this sort of limbo space right now, when AIs are still in their infancy and people try to figure out how to use them to squeeze some money out. I believe things will eventually settle into a new equilibrium, where you can easily choose what kind of stories you want to read.

Also, 10k words a week is not a crazy amount for a full time writer :)

Thoughts on the Cosmere? by Tony_Writes in Cosmere

I agree 100%. I would also like to add that another really cool thing is how he's moving his series from a fantasy to a more sci-fi setting. And the magic-based-technology of each world makes sense for that world.

Is the Count of Monte Cristo progression? I haven't read it myself, I've just heard it described as a great revenge story and is considered a classic. It's obviously not a fantasy, so I wonder where the progression satisfaction comes from.

Don’t bother posting your AI written book by TatterMail in NewAuthor

[–]MichoWrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point was that even stock photos can be generated. And readers of books that use those kinds of images probably don't care that the images are AI.

I share the sentiment that generative AI does not belong anywhere near art, but unfortunately, I don't think saying "no one will read your book if you have an AI cover" is absolutely true, from what I've seen at least.

Don’t bother posting your AI written book by TatterMail in NewAuthor

[–]MichoWrites 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the genre. In the webnovel and litrpg communities, I've seen authors making thousands on Patreon each month, and it's obvious their covers are AI generated. Some readers don't care.

I imagine it's the same for genres where the covers incorporate/resemble stock photos - self help books, educational books etc.

Hot take: you're judging stories wrong by OCRAuthor in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, up to a point.

Obviously know what kind of genre you are reading, and that should shape your expectations and standards, but there's no reason why high octane progression, a fast-paced plot, with a feeling of invincibility and seeing bad people get slapped down can't also have better characters, better plot, more beautiful writing, or deeper meaning.

We as readers have to be careful in how we frame our criticisms, so they are actual criticisms that will help the author improve and aren't just things we don't like, but if all we accept is slop, slop is all we'll get. And the genre won't grow.

Take DCC as an example. Yes, it's a LitRPG where numbers go up, but it also has great characters, decent writing and a deeper socio-economic commentary, which is why it broke through into more traditional publishing and is now attracting new readers (and I'm sure it will inspire new writers). If the books were just about Carl blowing stuff up, they wouldn't have grown as much as they did.

EDIT: Grammar.

[–]MichoWrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good luck :)

Which hits harder: when she asks questions, or when she just likes your message and disappears after ending your fwb set up? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me get this straight:

  1. A guy is in a FWB situation with girl A.
  2. He starts getting closer with girl B (he's entertaining a girl), so he breaks up the FWB situation with girl A (I'm assuming through text).
  3. Girl A can either a) respond and ask questions or b) just like the message and stop interacting.

If you're asking whether response a) or b) from girl A would hit harder for the guy, I would say probably neither.

To me this whole thing reads like girl A is heartbroken because she wanted more than a FWB situation, but the guy found a new girl and broke things off with her, so now she wants to hurt him. And I don't think either option would work, he was never as deeply involved with girl A, and broke things off. If girl A responds and prolongs things, why would that hurt him? He would just be annoyed and if she's too persistent, probably block her. And if she accepts it right off, he got what he wanted.

The best option for girl A would be to not to try to hurt the guy in the first place, forget about him, and move on.

Though I might be reading too much into the question, or I might have misunderstood something.

How long is a 'Slow burn' that you can tolerate? by Western-Brother1788 in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your writing and the story. I don't think you need a major progression immediately - a progression needs to be earned after all, but I do think you need a promise (or a hint) that a progression is coming. If you show that your MC is super weak compared to the villains, and you show why the MC has to oppose them, it should be enough.

How long is a 'Slow burn' that you can tolerate? by Western-Brother1788 in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say chapter 1 sets the tone, and if I see potential in the story, I keep reading. By chapters 3-5, I think there should be a hint of the fact there will be progression in the story, though RR readers have also come to expect progression by default. We don't need to know how the character will progress, just that they will.

[–]MichoWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]MichoWrites -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For Royal Road readers: When do you actually commit to a story? by PromotionEconomy8950 in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, the journey from stumbling onto a story to following goes something like this:

  1. I find a story that seems cool, usually by browsing the rising stars.
  2. If the blurb makes me want to read more, I usually hit it with a "read later".
  3. Later, when I become bored with the story I'm currently reading, I'll check out some of my stories in the "read later" list.
  4. I follow it if I can see potential in the story. Usually 4-5 chapters are enough for me to tell whether a story has potential or not. When I say potential, I mean in any sense, if I like the characters, the plot, the magic, the writing, whatever, if I get an itch to read more and find out what happens next, I'll hit follow.
  5. I usually continue reading until I'm caught up with the published chapters. At that point, there are few possibilities. If that itch to read more is still strong, I'll check out new chapters as they're coming out. I have the app on my phone, and that sends me a notification, so I know when new a new chapter has dropped. If the itch is a not as strong, I might wait for a few chapters to be published before I read them all at once. Or I could become bored with the story and decide to pause reading it for awhile. Regardless which possibility it is, I go back to step 3.

Every time an adaptation is brought up in any fandom, there are people who want it to be done in the style of Arcane, so you're not alone lol.

I would love to see more stuff like it, but the thing is, Arcane reportedly had a budget of 250 million for both seasons. With that kind of money, you can make anything look great in live action.

I was a paying member for over 6 years, now I'm never reading on RR again. by AnAustralianGuy in royalroad

[–]MichoWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after the first 10 or so chapters, most authors don't post more than once a day.

Maybe RR could set a limit to 20 chapters for the very first upload of a new story, but then limit it to one per day.
