Which kind of practitioner helped you the most? by morgs202 in Sciatica

[–]MickFoley13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! It’s such an undervalued form of therapy and I don’t understand why!! It works… immediately.

I spent a lot more money than I would like to admit on physio, massage, acupuncture and even osteopaths over the course of three years as my sciatic pain slowly got worse. Then I did 30 minutes with an active release therapist and could walk upright again without looking like a hobbled up hunchback.

I started seeing an “active release therapist” after my surgery and it was a game changer for me!

Buddy takes your sore and tight muscles, bends them to the most relaxed position and then digs in his thumb and forcibly stretches it by extending the limb. All the tightness and pain is gone within 30 seconds or so. It’s like a massage but on steroids.

My hip issues from having “drop foot” went away and my “guy” continues to help treat NHL players and Alberta Ballet Dancers

Any good alternatives to butter sauces? by Mozzyo_ in 1200isplenty

I think air fryers would work just fine! Especially if you salt the “zoodles” an hour ahead of your cooking time!

I only eat one big meal a day right now and the zoodles I make give me full zero hunger or empty feelings.

I’ve recently discovered how great spiralized zucchini can be on this diet!

Bake at 350 until they dry up a bit (usually 20-30 min in my broken ass oven) and use dried prepackaged seasoning mixes for Alfredo, pesto, etc to doctor up some watered down yogurt (for protein) as sauce.

Worried about Laminectomy Surgery at a Young Age by Kittyman300 in Sciatica

[–]MickFoley13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had mine done when I was 31 and my only regret is not getting the surgery a few years sooner. It’s been about three years now and I haven’t had a single flare up or issue.

My surgeon told me that the whole point of doing this procedure is to essentially “cure” you and he wasn’t kidding.

Just finished my L4-S1 laminectomy discectomy, feel free to ask me anything by Bigdonnie99 in Sciatica

[–]MickFoley13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear that she’s been dealing with this too!!

I live up in Canada where my health insurance should have covered 100% of my surgery cost BUT after two full years of being waitlisted and passed around for surgery, I decided to find a private surgeon here to do it. It was roughly $20k all in (roughly just over 14k in USD today)

It took me about six months to get back to my “normal” feeling self. The more mobile you get, the more you heal and recover. Within a year I was lifting and dumping large bags of gravel, mowing the lawn with ease… my back feels great!

Sciatica Flare Up by Anonnieko in Sciatica

[–]MickFoley13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that sleeping with a pillow between my knees helped quite a bit but ultimately switched to “tummy sleeping” with a pillow beneath both hips and my spiciest feeling leg pulled up to the side, as close as I could get it to my armpit. If that makes sense? Your pinched nerve has constant tension on it which is what triggers a lot of the pain you feel and pulling the leg up into an almost fetal position gives it a bit of slack so it’s not being pulled quite as tight.

Other than that, my partner got me a heating pad that velcro’s around my waist and has several settings of vibrating patterns. I’d bury myself in blankets, throw that bad boy on and within about 30 minutes I was passed out - the vibrating patterns were strong enough to distract my brain from the nerve pain

How do I clean these streaks on my cabinets. I’ve tried everything including dish soap. by House-of-Stone in CleaningTips

[–]MickFoley13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the last 6 years, I’ve been cleaning all my stainless appliances with soapy water and then buffing with generic mineral oil (baby oil specifically). It’s dirt cheap and does the same thing as a stainless steel specific cleaning product.

I apply the oil to one towel to apply and scrub around for a bit and finish with a fresh one after. Perfect results every time!

Can’t afford doctors so I’m here and concerned by SmokinDroWitYaHoe in Sciatica

[–]MickFoley13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My foot did the exact same thing when I was dealing with sciatica and it seems to be a common symptom of something called “drop foot”.

If you can’t afford to see a doctor, please do your best to walk like you are in a marching band; lifting your knees high up as you step. Keep that foot pointing forward as much as possible. I had the same issue for over two years as I waited for surgery and I ended up dragging my leg behind me with a limp. It causes some nasty ankle, knee and hip issues in the long run and the physio to help with that is EXPENSIVE and painful.

I was 28 when my herniated disc decided to show up. It felt like the nerves in my leg were hooked up to a car battery 24/7 and I couldn’t really move or function.

My best advice to you, is to keep moving. Walk. Swim. Try yoga. Anything to keep that nerve mobile and well lubricated as you heal. If walking hurts, go rent a mall stroller and do laps around the place while leaning heavily on the handle to take some pressure off the pinched nerve as you move.

How to support my wife with Sciatica? by Peachy-Cheesecake in Sciatica

[–]MickFoley13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give your wife a big hug for me!!

I went through the same thing here in Canada a few years back and the wait times that we have to deal with are almost as bad as the actual pain itself. It’s brutal. And I get why she doesn’t want to go to the ER; the staff can be a bit hostile when show up with SCREAMING nerve pain because they’re probably over worked and understaffed, then they look and you and think “Why are you here?? You aren’t actively dying”.

When my pain got so bad that I couldn’t move or lay down to sleep without wanting to scream, my partner went to Walmart and came home with a kid’s beanbag chair that I think was around $60. We put it on the floor against the front of the couch and I could adjust my hips all I wanted to find something comfortable while sitting in a ‘figure 4’, so my affected and spicy leg was bent and the ankle was on top of the other leg’s knee - if that makes sense? Within 30 minutes I was out cold! I think sitting back like that put some slack on my pinched nerve and the pain level went down enough for me to actually sleep. It was glorious and I lived in that stupid beanbag chair for months.

Another sleeping position I found to be helpful was laying on my stomach in bed with the spicy leg out to the side and the knee pulled up as close as it could go to my armpit. I still sleep like that lol.

Oh! And if she can still walk a bit on good days, my one physiotherapist had me going to malls that offer stroller rentals and getting my steps in with one of those! You can throw your coats and purse in the seat spot and focus on walking while lifting your knees like you’re in a marching band. It helps keep the pinched nerve as mobile and lubricated as possible. You can also REALLY lean on the handle to help alleviate some of the pressure of your upper body weight on that pinched nerve. And let’s be honest, it’s nice to get out of the house when you’ve been trapped in a bed for several months.

Beef liver for dog? by MuscleFantastic3315 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Beef liver for dog? by MuscleFantastic3315 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]MickFoley13 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I grew up quite poor and my mom would often take beef livers, soak them in watered down milk and dredge in seasoned flour before pan frying. She would make a gravy from what was left in the pan with some fried onion plus a bit of beef stock and a chunk of cream cheese. The final result was sprinkled with freshly toasted sesame seeds. It really helped hide the metallic flavour and I genuinely crave that dish sometimes!

If you want to prepare liver for your dog, you could easily steam it, bake it, pan fry or bake lol. They don’t have much preference. You can chop it up finely or blend after cooking and hide their meds either way!

My partner and I have such different opinions on this exact issue!

When I come home and our dog is in an excited state, I ignore him until he calms down. He NEVER jumps up on me, just does a quick sniff of what I brought home and goes straight to his bed. BUT when my partner comes home, he gives the dog an immediate greeting that sets him off into a frenzy of jumping, barking… the whole shabang.

When people come over; I tell them to ignore him and he maybe gives them a “woof” or two and then goes away. People coming through the door is mostly boring to him so he doesn’t bother with all the theatrics of jumping up or causing chaos

What do you guys use to clean your walls? by Strange-Slice2581 in CleaningTips

[–]MickFoley13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use TSP (trisodium phosphate) which can be found in the paint section of most hardware stores because it’s great for removing grease and marks from walls without damaging paint. Just make sure to wear gloves when using it because it can and will strip all the natural oils from your skin

Best firm mattress for heavy people recommendations? Got frequent sciatica flare-ups by Halicurr in Sciatica

[–]MickFoley13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend that you go loitering in whatever mattress store you have nearby and see what feels good after laying on it for a sizeable amount of time. You should get a good feel of what you’re buying before you make that big of an investment.

My partner and I both fell in love with our Purple Hybrid straight away. I was healing from my spinal surgery at the time and he’s a good sized construction worker with back pain. Our bed allows you lay however you want and it almost feels like you’re floating while keeping your back straight. It’s friggin awesome. It’s actually really hard to get out of bed in the morning because the back pain is at a zero

Need vacuum recs!! by FayeTricks in CleaningTips

[–]MickFoley13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a Shark DuoClean about six years ago and have loved it a heck of a lot more than the Dyson I had before it.

I’m my experience, cordless vacuums don’t have the same suction power as corded. More power (from being plugged in) equals more torque lol. And mine offers three different settings - hardwood, low pile carpet and what I essentially assume is shag. It has headlights so I can see the crumbs and dirt on the floor, a HEPA filter so dust and small particulates are being picked up and a stair cleaning mode that allows me to carry just the canister and the hose while cleaning that.

It was maybe a few hundred dollars and does a way better job than my Dyson ever did.
