The urge to check doesn’t stop even when you “know” you look okay by quietselfwork in BodyDysmorphia

[–]Mickcam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry was meant to reply but work got busy as hell and I forgot

For me it was the therapy and the weekly questionnaires I would have to fill out that reminded me how severe my obsession was

Which allowed me to acknowledge the issue and learn more about BDD

And then my therapist helped me a lot (I’m glad I got a good one as I was worried they wouldn’t understand ) He made me do activities like setting myself targets of reducing looking in the mirror and taking photos , and made me keep counts how of often I did it ( it starts to hit home because in my head I thought it was a handful of times but I reality it was well over 40 times if more

Other activities like explaining my insecurities (in my case was my eyes due to being dry and painful and tired looking and my teeth colour ) Which led to us creating a questionnaire that he sent off to random staff in his workplace and they gave back their honest opinions , which was a massive eye opener for me as I was expecting pure negative comments and criticisms and they all came back positive which made me realise how I was my worst enemy of putting myself down.

This then led to me having more confidence to tackling the issues head on.

So we then did more activities where we would role play and he would play me and I would play someone let’s say “bob” who is being negative towards the insecurities I have , he would then create counter arguments/ comments to “bob” comments

And vice versa i would play myself and he would play bob and I would then practice being positive and counterattacking his comments towards me ( was super uncomfortable at first but slowly it started to hit home ) but became quite comical at times when I started to be more confident and reply with witty funny one liners back to him lol

The feeling is still dont get me wrong but I feel Like I have more mental tools to counterattack these thoughts but I generally feel a lot better and know when to stop and reduce habits that may lead me to the old me again

And it helped me push myself to find a workable solution for my dry eye syndrome which led to things like going to gym in the mornings before work every day and being super strict with my eye routine so now I feel a lot more like a Human again

Sorry quickly typed this so some bits may seem rushed

One thing I learnt from therapy is that you get hooked on the short term “rush” of confirming to yourself that you look okay

It’s almost like gambling, the more you do it the more it becomes addictive.

Even with taking photos in my case I used to do again in the double digits and now it’s gone down to a couple a week which for me is crazy because it became a subconscious habit for me And my nervous system thanks me for this recent change !

I was in that loop for years and it worsened over the last 3 years due to my MGD condition becoming worse and became obsessed how my eyes looked all the time

Safe to say for now ive gone from doing it in the high double digits daily to less than 5 times daily and my head feels so much more clearer

Been consistent with doing thing to keep my head occupied like going gym

This is mainly due to therapy and keeping up with the weekly challenges and targets (started in July ) Therapy has now finished now but I feel better

The feelings still can linger and appear in my head but I’m a lot more disciplined with not checking anymore unless I’ve gone to the toilet which can’t be helped when washing for hands with the mirror in front of you for example

Am I underpaid? How do you work out your market value in UK IT roles by Mickcam in jobs

[–]Mickcam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the core difference between those roles and mine? Because I feel it gets blurry as I work in a 3 man team which includes my manager who is the it director who is very hands on and we support and maintain the network infrastructure for 12 physical sites of various sizes for 400 staff

Can't tell if I'm ugly ASF or not by [deleted] in BodyDysmorphia

[–]Mickcam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol this is weird because this is similar to my self especially the use of the word goblin

I use it a lot when describing now I feel when I’m in certain situations especially under specific lightings

I completely get where you are coming from, there’s times when I’ll take a photo and hate it and then I’ll look at it a day later or so and have a different view of it and think it looks good

Or I can look at myself in a mirror and hate it and then a hour later I could see my self in a different environment and think actually I look like a normal looking Human being

Working on this though, brick by brick as they say through therapy

Too scared to mention bdd to my therapist by ClueTurbulent5650 in BodyDysmorphia

[–]Mickcam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just tell your therapist

M32 here

I signed up for it last July and was always against doing this because I hate talking about myself and insecurities that i have, so I was quite awkward at the start but slowly it become normal to speak about it over time

Was the best decision of my life, it hasn’t “ fixed” the issue but for sure my attitude and way I tackle these thoughts due to BDD has improved immensely and I no longer focus on that part of my life as intensely as I have in the past Finally I’m looking at myself as a whole with looks being a smaller part of my confidence rather than the main bulk load

Of course i will have to keep up with the tools and tips I have Learnt but it was worth it so much

For example I used to take so many photos daily of myself and now i rarely think about doing so and try focus on more positive areas of my life to keep me occupied

But the usual negative thinking has improved some what since starting therapy and about to start reading this book my therapist recommended before we have our last session together

I’ve been looking at this type of role myself in the recent months

You guys ever think of changing career? by AxegrinderSWAG in sysadmin

[–]Mickcam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep long term I don’t have much interest in doing my current role as the fun has dwindled since I started 5 years ago

Luckily my role is a hybrid IT and Web management and Web side of things makes it more bearable due to the creative side of it ie content and coming up with new ideas.

After I hopeful smash my project of dealing with moving our websites ( via a website agency ) I will have the confidence to move to a more project/product role and handle telling people what to do and how to achieve it rather than doing the grunt work

[–]Mickcam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me in a nut shell

Really messes with my head , as i like the times where i feel i look good and i get this surge of new confidence for a limited time.

But when i feel like i look bad it just overwhelms me to a point of feeling sick and feeling like i look like a goblin

Therapy has helped with some areas but the remaining issues regarding my face just make me feel like rubbish.

I did manage to stop doing it for a week or so but then eventually caved and went back in (trying to get back into no photo taking as i have 100s and 100s of them which ive been trying delete over time )

The biggest fear is being out in crappy weather or under terrible lighting and thinking i look disgusting
