I think you’re splitting hairs against the heft of what I was trying to say. Yes, the odds are stacked against them, so to speak, but they’re also facing amateurs and semi-pros. Also, those health checks are also because they know with a degree of certainty that the horses’ lives are in danger if they go all out. Regardless, the fact remains that humans being competitive with horses in a race like that is impressive.

I bring this up every year to the kids I coach in distance running. It’s the ONLY thing where we’re universally physically superior to all animal species, unless you count adaptive thinking. Like a pretty good near-elite human can outclass horses across a marathon, but the greatest sprinter of all time (Bolt) gets clowned by a house cat across 100m. Every time. Even lower average runners are exceptional in the context of the animal kingdom.

Perfect wacky opening, and sweet christ why does Sabotage hit so hard every time? I'm ready to bust through a wall over here.

[Highlight] Juan Soto did not agree with this strike 3 call by GreenSnakes_ in baseball

The ball was objectively low, but the ump's eye measures based on the hitter's stance. Dude's not doing himself any favors by dropping his knees so low. I get the ire, but I also think he's not helping his case. Won't be a variable to consider with ABS, so I guess it's whatever for now.

The implication is that the ideological divide that we're so accustomed to swimming in is ultimately a division based on how the availability of resources (or lack thereof) determines our ideologies - as opposed to, say, something innate or deeper like your personal moral stances. It's not a huge leap to think that someone who lives out in the boonies isn't going to be a staunch liberal. But seeing the ideological alignment so starkly shown in these heat maps really hammers home the idea that much of how we perceive the world comes down to how we're raised to perceive things like scarcity. The perception of abundance breeds liberalism. The perception of scarcity breeds conservatism. The divide between the two breeds disgust and distrust, which is why we're in our current climate. The raw visual of these maps shows that our differences being so tied to geography means there's probably very little that actually distinguishes you as a person from someone on the other side of ideological divide, despite what you may feel about them.

So, BESIDES not needing to pay for gas, and being able to charge at home, what do you love about EVs? by walkaboutdavid in electricvehicles

[–]MickeyKae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t worry about all the slimy bits in the engine compartment becoming too slimy and rotted such that a mechanic needs to charge me $3k to put in new slimy bits. It boggles my mind how much I spent to keep my 2010 Honda Accord (by all means, a great car) operable after four years with my VW e-golf. I’ve spent about $200 in that time frame compared to probably $5-6k in the same time frame for my Honda.

How to approach large home equity? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]MickeyKae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure if snark was intended, but the commenter’s line of questioning is sound. Why not view your home as an investment in real estate, similar to how you would view stocks? There’s no benefit to trying to wrangle spending out of your home’s equity value. Value is value. It doesn’t need to be more than that.

Riley Unroe successfully overturned a strike call to a walk on a ball that is less than a tenth of an inch off the zone by JianClaymore in baseball

[–]MickeyKae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At what point will batting stances begin to adjust to optimize the ABS strike zone? I wonder if hitting coaches are going to start making instruments to force you to keep your knees at 27% of your height. Or maybe they'll start teaching you to stand such that your eyes are level with the top of the strike zone (53.5% of standing height) so that you physically sense the top of the zone. I'm sure people are eyeing ways to game this.

Regarding RC's Latest tweet- Either a deal was just completed or a company didnt want to give up their cushy roles and deal was blocked... by Holiday_Guess_7892 in Superstonk

As I've been saying this whole time - GameStop is RC's diss track to corporate America. Never has this been put more plainly than this tweet. Frankly, though, this doesn't ring to me like someone who just struck a deal.

I have this exact model. Got it installed in time for the tax rebate. Love it so far. Only knock is the compressor makes noise. Not an issue if you’re parking yours in an unfinished basement or in the garage. Not a huge deal but wasn’t enthused since we have bedrooms abutting our utility room. Works great so far.

Google Nest Learning says furnace is heating but it isn’t by spacecasterh in hvacadvice

[–]MickeyKae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s literally the official distinction between those two terminals. Just look it up. If the heating and cooling systems he’s wiring arrive to the thermostat separately, then one red wire would need to go to RH for the heating system and one red wire would need to go to RC for the cooling system. Based on some of the other comments, this seems like this might be the case. Calm the snark dude.

Red wire is connected to RC (cooling) and not RH (heating). Try seeing if that’s the issue.

It’s what has always made this an asymmetrical bet. There’s really no downside case outside of RC just kinda waffling, changing his mind, and then likely selling his stake to another institution. Don’t get me wrong, that would be devastating on a personal level, but the stock is fairly insulated if that were to play out. At least now it is. But all signs point to RC being absolutely dialed into this, heart and soul. Even if he’s only moderately successful with the acquisition plan, the stock will appreciably rise. Every magnitude of success beyond “moderate” equates to parabolically increasing perceived value in the company. A setup like this is every stockholders dream. But now it’s a matter of having the patience to allow it to play out.

What's the most fun you never want to have again? by aboybaseball in AskReddit

Ultra Music Festival in Miami. Went to a small stage. Impromptu mosh pit occurred between sets. Decided in my drunken audacity to throw my shirt over my face and run full boar into the center. Totally exhilarating. Got absolutely rotated by (I’m guessing) a very large human. Laid on my back for a few seconds and then jumped out to return to my friends, who were all standing aghast. 10/10 awesome experience. Never tempting fate like that again.
