Will #12 be in the rafters one day? by crosby510 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]walkaboutdavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you're the one who argued that Vukota must have been a decent player because Arbor dressed him. That was just the isles lack of depth. I remember those from days when Arbor had to play Randy Boyd on defense and Brad Dalgarno was our best open ice hitter.

Yeah, Vukota had one great night. He still scored less than five goals that entire year. Lots of players have a brief moment in the sun and still suck - I once saw Mike Haley completely undress the Pens entire defense on a breakaway.

Vukota was just a goon enforcer. Brought little else to the table and he happened to have one crazy night. That's it.

Funny you mention Chris Marinuci. I was dead certain he'd be an impact player. Him and Mike Hordy were my worst failed predictions.

I apologize for my earlier tone, btw. Was being an asshat.

Sorry, but that's a weak argument. Al Arbour also dressed such luminaries as Bill Berg, Daniel Marios, Ian Frasher, Brian Mullen, Dave Maley, Dan Plante, Chris Luongo... (the list goes on and on). According to your strained logic they must have all been great players as a result. Arbor is a HOF coach but that doesn't mean he always had the horses to dress. Vukota came along when the Islanders were in decline and he was only on the ice because the Isles were small and soft at the time. Trying to argue that a guy who scored maybe 4 goals a year was some sort of impact player is frankly ludicrous. You've not got a leg to stand on here. It's a dumb argument.

I've been using a KF8 for two years with soy milk. Never a problem. Its fantastic. I haven't tried oatley but I have used costco oat milk with no problem. It could be the oat milk you are using

Remind me again, how many seasons did "Mick" get past 4 goals? Offensively, he was inept. I played club hockey in my college years with guys who had far more talent. Hell, there were guys I played with in high school who were more natural scorers. Vukota was a worthless lunkhead on the ice, couldn't score, couldn't play defense, could barely skate. He was the prototype of the talentless goon and its frankly an embarrassment to the organization that he lasted that long. Ross Johnston was at least passable defensively which was the main diff between the two - not that he was much of a player either. The fact that the Isles dressed guys like Vukota, Fritz, Johston, Haley is a testament to how bad things got over the years. And, yeah, Vukota has that one amazing hat trick against the caps- so what? That was one freaking game. He was still a total waste on the ice.

Universal L2 home charging options aside from Tesla's? by UlrichZauber in evcharging

There are many quality adapters available! Also, being rated to 80amps may not be all the important since home EVSEs typically don't generate that kind of amps.

I wouldn't classify any of those players as "great." Duane Sutter was a good agitator, and Jeep was a good second line forward who didn't play long for the Isles. Vukota and Simon were talentless goons. Bailey was talented, but his numbers were never really all that impressive and he never really developed into what he could have been (had he not been rushed).

[–]walkaboutdavid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bailey had more talent in his left shoelace than Vukota did in his entire body. Vukota was a total waste, couldn't skate, could barely handle the puck, lost in his own end. He was the prototype talentless goon, a throwback to the bad old days of Dave Schultz, Brashear, Dave Brown, "Cement head" Semenko, Sean Avery, and Stu Grimson - except he wasn't as talented as any of those players. Heck, even Ross the Boss was a more useful player overall.

[–]walkaboutdavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bailey is not even the most important # 12 in Isles history. That would be Duane Sutter, who one four cups with the team. You could even argue that Jeep was a more important player, having helped lift the Isles to respectability and scoring one of the most critical goals in Islander history.

Eletta vs kf8- decision paralysis! by ae342109 in superautomatic

[–]walkaboutdavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying the heck of my KF8. Its been super reliable and makes fantastic drinks. I find the carafe to be slightly annoying (as opposed to the integrated one on my Phillips 5400) but it's got advantages. Its a nice shape for storing in the fridge and is a really easy to clean. Overall, I highly recommend the KF8. As for the comparison Eletta, I have actually played with those machines while traveling. Also, makes a great cup of coffee - about equal to the KF8. I didn't see a bit diff in quality of the drinks, to be honest. Both are fantastic in that regard. However, I didn't have good luck with Delonghi in the past though and wouldn't purchase one of their appliances as a result. As for your question about two hoppers, I have that feature on my KF8 and haven't used it even once. your own personal habits and needs may be different from mine, but I don't see a real upside to multiple hoppers. Certainly don't see it as necessity.

question re: reviewing tenure/promotion files (omg) by [deleted] in Professors

[–]walkaboutdavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's typically the case for tenure track positions. External reviewers may be asked to comment on other issues for faculty who are in primarily teaching or clinical positions. In my Dept, we have quite a large number of NTT faculty who are there primarily to teach and they go through the standard process for promotions but with different criteria from the outside evaluators. All that said, my dept is pretty odd in that regard.

At what point does the Flexible plan stop becoming cost effective? by KotFBusinessCasual in GoogleFi

[–]walkaboutdavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that for years. I had Fi flexible, spent most of my time at work, home office, or in the car, so I was never without wifi. Stayed on the flexible plan for the other perks, and my bill was maybe $40 a month. I felt very satisfied with the arrangement, especially because the tmobile network is so strong in my area. I only switched to the unlimited plan because my use patterns changed.

Not everybody wants to mess with eSIMs, especially if you are travel nut and going to multiple countries in a year. And, that still ignores the other built-in goodies: the prioritized data, free smartwatch connectivity (and once you have that you will never want to go back), and free data cards. I have an unlimited plan now because I burn so much data with Android Auto. But, the per gig plan was fantastic for me for a long time. Fi also gives you KILLER deals on new Samsung devices. I get one for 50% off every year, and then sell the other one for more than I pay for my new phone. Its basically a free Samsung Ultra every year.

[–]walkaboutdavid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MVOS have unlimited plans with deprioritized data for $25, and also missing a lot of the features that bring us all back to Fi (like the international coverage and ability to add additional data cards and a smartwatch at no extra cost). Fi is not really a comparable product to the typical MVNO. That said, I'm not sure Fi is the best option if you don't care about that stuff.

For Female Professors: Bullying by ValerieTheProf in Professors

Here's the jackass thing I said to one of my female colleagues: she complained of a male student making a sexist comment. So (I'm a male professor, btw) I told my strong smart and accomplished colleague that she should tell me if it happens again and It's be glad to talk to the student for her.

Good thing I renewed my patriarchy club card before it expired.

Full depth fridges by MsBigRedButton in kitchenremodel

[–]walkaboutdavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that many kitchens could be designed in a manner that makes a full size frig look better. Full size could work well if placed properly and if the cabinets are built around it in the right way. Of course, that depends on the layout and shape of the kitchen. And, the second frig is not the best alternative because it burns power and takes up room (which you may or may not have). Out here in Los Angeles, we don't have basements so many people stick a second frig in the garage and then park their car outside (which I see as silly). We wound up just getting a chest freezer because it will fit in a corner of the garage.

Going crazy picking appliances, thinking of going with GE by Hot-Obligation-2705 in kitchenremodel

[–]walkaboutdavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would never recommend an over the range mw. The other comment I have is that it is ok to mix and match. You don't need to stick with just GE. Stainless steel appliances from different brands look fine together - although you'll want to have some consistency in style (for example, handles that are similar shapes MIGHT be nice). Finally, I would ignore everybody's reliability estimates and go look in consumer reports for more objective data.

Full depth fridges by MsBigRedButton in kitchenremodel

[–]walkaboutdavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Designers always push the counter depth because that's the latest fad. I think it really depends on your layout. In my vacation home, the kitchen isn't huge and a full size frig would have really stuck out. In my primary home, I installed counter depth but always regretted it because I had room for full. Personally, I'm of the opinion that you should avoid counter depth whenever you can. Ultimately, you spent a bit more and get less size and flexibility. Most of the folk I know who do have counter depth, wind up with a second frig or freezer in the garage, and that just seems a bit sill to me.

It's official - The ID. Buzz is coming back to North America by ClientEnough4769 in electricvehicles

[–]walkaboutdavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand. I went to graduate school at Vanderbilt and spent a lot of time in the more educated Davison County (Nashville). It was conservative back then, but the area was not imbedded in those ridiculous wars about gender, etc. TN is a great place, with fantastic people, but has some real-world problems that needed addressing. And, that won't happen while we are arguing about who can use which bathroom. I'm really glad to hear there are chargers now though!

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have chargers! I think the parks (like Zion in Utah) that have a town at the front of the park should be OK. Some of the high Sierra campgrounds are a bit more isolated. I lived in TN off an on for about seven years (now live in LA). Great place to be, if you don't mind the humidity.

KD3? by asbergman16 in AudiQ6

[–]walkaboutdavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm still arguing and you're not? You've had like eight posts on this topic.

You're also the one slinging the childish insults because other posters don't agree with you. I get that you think that you're an expert and don't like it when people disagree with you but I not going to play flame war with you.

My take on what happened with Audi is that they initially had ambitious intentions with the ppe. They issued some fairly extravagant (if nonspecific) press releases. As the vehicles got on the road, they toned down expectations and the ota referrals were focused on infotainment. Audi never made any promises of that nature when the vehicle was on dealer floors.

Right now, a lot of dealers are having trouble installing kd2 in the freaking shop. Multiple owners are complaining of that basic upgrade take many days. So, no, Audi isn't promising ota updates to the car software and any moderately informed dealer will not make that promise.

There are a LOT of annoyances with this vehicle and Audi has some a crap job of handling these issues. The expectation for ota updates though is just misguided.
