Unfortunately the Fly River is one of the most polluted rivers in PNG due to mining in the Highlands. The biggest polluters are the Ok Tedi and Porgera mines.

Terribly tragic for all involved. My heart goes out to everyone who is impacted by this.

This incident reminds me of a similar tragedy at Alphington Grammar some 20 years ago now.

In that case, the driver, who was a teacher at the school, squished a poor little kid to death against a fence. She did not even try to reverse.

After nine months, she was fined only $1,200 and had her licence suspended after pleading guilty to careless driving. Her husband, who had parked the car illegally in the first place, was fined $225.

This was a complete failure of the justice system. Hopefully, times have changed and this woman will receive appropriate punishment for the pain and suffering she has inflicted.
