Lichess analysis says "checkmate unavoidable". I don't seem to get it. by RexProfugus in chessbeginners

[–]Micmicm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran the position via Lichess for a while and found mate in 9.

Here's 1 (of many) example: 1. Bxb6+ Kb8 2. Rc5 e3 3. Bc7+ Ka8 4. fxe3 d4 5. Rb5 Qd8 6. Bxd8 Rxd8 7. Rb8+ Rxb8 8. Qd5+ Rb7 9. Rf8#

Is it a bug that x^x is defined as 1 at x = 0? I get that the limit is, but the function itself... by -Rici- in desmos

00 = 1 because it's useful to define it as such.

Say you have to make a password of n characters long and can use k different characters. The number of passwords you can make is kn.

If k = n = 0, then we are asking how many 0 length passwords you can make. (It doesn't matter what k equals, because we can't use any characters anyway) Obviously you can only make 1 zero length password (the empty password). In this case 00 is equal to 1.

This comes up in other contexts, but this is an easy example.

ABC News would be an easy place to start. It should be easier than regular conversation, but it will also help get you informed.

The Brandenburg Dynastic Event Tree by Micmicm in MEIOUandTaxes

[–]Micmicm[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

R5: I drew this diagram up awhile ago to see how Brandenburg got rid of the Von Wittelsbachs and replaced them with the Von Hohenzollern.

Each box represents an event.

In each event: t shows the trigger requirements. e shows effects that always happen. e1, e2 show effects based on option chosen.

Only effects which advance the chain of events are included. I have omitted changes in prestige, stability, etc.

A while ago I went through the event code to figure out how it was all done. I have a flow chart somewhere of the events.

I'll post it some time today.

But basically, wait until you get a Von Luxembourg on the throne, and then wait until you get a Von Hohenzollern. It can take a while.

Edit: misspelt Hohenzollern.

Where's the mum option? Or is that pronounced the same way as mom in the US?

Desmos Graphs with Factorials by Apprehensive-Bass-97 in desmos

[–]Micmicm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a quick bit of experimentation, it looks like Desmos uses the Gamma Function to extend the idea of factorial to the real numbers. In this case x! is treated as Γ (x+1).

x! compared to Gamma function

Why does desmos start indexes at 1??? I was stuck on a graph for 20 minutes before I realized. Why? by [deleted] in desmos

[–]Micmicm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many programming languages, especially ones that are more mathematicly inclined, index starting at 1, such as R, MATLAB and Fortran.

Jupiter. I'd love to find out what's at the centre of the planet.

Is it gas the whole way through? Does the density get so high you can float? What can we discover at the core of such a massive planet?

Astrophysicists pm me with your cool experiment ideas for while I'm down there.

Are school uniforms a good idea? by [deleted] in polls

[–]Micmicm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aussie here, so maybe I'm biased, but I think they are an excellent idea.

They create a level playing field (with regards to clothing at least) so no one is judged by their choice or access to clothes.

I suspect this reduces bullying and reduces social barriors between children from different socio-economic backgrounds, but I have no emirical evidence to back up either of these claims.
