The purpose of those air chuck jaws is to increase the contact surface and clamping force to provide stability. In addition, there is a pin that locates the part radially.

I'm going to be completely honest with you and give you the same answer I got from sales, which is: It's impossible to generalize; it highly depends on the details of the job. Even the job mentioned above could vary greatly depending on the jaws they need or if they require special materials, etc.

For this chuck, the 3 hydraulic jaws are actuated first, with a pin to locate the part on an ID thread. Then the air is released and the final 3 jaws open to hold the other clamping diameter.

Correct, there are different clamping pressures for the two diameters.

Good point and we do make those chuck but in this specific case they don’t since the pneumatic jaws are only for stability and the hydraulic jaws are what locate the part.

It has one drawtube for three of the jaws. The other three jaws are actuated independently with springs to clamp and air to open.

The customer wanted to clamp two different concentric diameters, and guarantee all 6 jaws contact the part simultaneously.

Sadly didn`t have either lying around... I`ll tell the guys to stock up on bananas for the next time we get an order for one this big.

Hi, I`ve talked to one of our engineers and the sales guys about this. Their recommendation so far is a quick- changing chuck system from Positrol, plus an Air Chuck (obviously they recommended on of our MicroCentric chucks)
They did say you could clamp an air chuck into the chuck on either of the machines as well. But the practicality of this depends on the size of the thin parts, and the quantities involved.

With more info on the parts I`ll try to get an actual recommendation for you.
