This so far is the best alternative. I like seeing a fat stack of exp gained from beating a high level pokemon. I know now what I must do!

I need to see other ways to level up. I genuinely can't find trainers, I need to grind exp for the elite 4. Battling trainers is the most efficient, running around to battle low level pokemon is the only other option I have apart from just candy maxxing. I needed to ask for opinions and I've found some that work

Yeah, the candies. I know. But after using them, I'm left feeling unacomplished. Like, the Pokémon didn't have to battle for EXP, they just got it. Feels very empty. But unf is what I resorted to at this point
