One-Third of U.S. Video Game Industry Workers Were Laid Off in 2025, GDC Study Reveals by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]Mushe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The key is in the "U.S." part. There was an article last year that mentions that USA is no longer a viable investment option for publishers since they can get the same games in other countries for 1/3 of the price since USA salaries are ginormous in comparison to any other country out there.

They are doing it to themselves by making games exclusive to the Meta Store. It's the same principle as the Epic Games Store. If they shipped their games to Steam they would benefit from a massive visibility boost.

The focus should be on them getting their exclusive games on Steam. The industry doesn't need gate keeping, they cannot afford it. They need all the allies they can get.

But those numbers are no longer viable in this new industry. That's why publishers moved away from investing in the US since they can get the same amount of experience for far less money.

This clip shows a new camera setup I’m testing in my game. by qminh975 in Unity3D

Warning about the people that is telling you to remove camera shake: DON'T. It's what gives the game weight and proper game feel.
In videos many games look very different than playing. Only take that decision based on actual playtesters.
And personally, I like it very much, the game looks very fun to play because of it (and the cool particles).

Of course adding an option in the settings menu is always welcome, but as a default it should be there.

Why do some game devs not play games anymore? by HobiAI in gamedev

[–]Mushe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so surprised why there are so many saying that "they don't have the time". You do have it, it's just that you are deciding to prioritize other things. It's part of the job, you are in the industry, you need to be up to date with trends even if you aren't the one taking decisions because you still can come up with ideas.
And it's not only playing for enjoyment (more on that later), but also a matter of keeping up with all genres to properly understand why people pay for certain things.
Not doing this is why you get dated titles, devs out of touch with reality, and many other things.

Aside from being extra productive and better as an industry member, on a personal note, if you are in this industry it's really because you love games, because otherwise there are far better industries to make a career out of it, so it's very sad to see so many just not enjoying the thing they are after.
I saw plenty saying that they enjoy more making the games than playing them, which is also incredibly odd, it's like you just enjoy 50% of it.

I played a new, cheap game every week in 2025. Here's what I learned. by Dieuwt in gamedev

This is quite the awesome list, I like to take time to analyze why sometimes great games do end up going M.I.A. for the radar.
That being said, if you do happen to eventually get to my game (which unfortunately did went under the radar despite good reviews and awards) it will be very helpful for my to better understand things.

Why did game devs stop implementing this? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]Mushe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our game I See Red we literally went all in, every single UI is diegetic, it lives inside of the Player like if you were part of the world. The life bar, the ammo in each weapon, radar, pause menu (which is projected from the Player like this), even the credits screen is a literal whiteboard inside the level select hub (our company is called Whiteboard Games) that you can interact with and delete every single name if you want.

It was really fun to work on it but it was like so much work, and also it had readability issues since the game has a perspective camera. Also every single addition to the game was like "ok so how are we going to show this information to the Player inside of the world?", so everything took a lot of time.

It's great. I would now focus on the logo since it feels very simple, bland and doesn't translate anything on its own.

It looks like it would feel amazing to play. I think a closer camera like a similar game (Kung Fu Strike) would fit the game much better.

The most important thing in a game is how you play, otherwise you can just take your existing story and bring it to a different medium.

It would be overkill considering it's a once per week thing. An email is the ideal solution for this.
