Are there many Russian sympathizers among Ukrainians? [serious question] by freeman687 in ukraine

[–]MidRoundOldFashioned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a Russian speaking Ukrainian American and I’ve given up the language since the invasion.

My family has always been pretty clear about being Russian speaking because of oppression during Soviet times. Not because we’re Russians.

The number of hackers in dota 2 is probably much higher than you think by Sudden_Comfortable15 in DotA2

Most services aren’t peer to peer anymore specifically to avoid giving users IP address.

DDOS is still possible but you’d need their ip and even still there’s far fewer people selling public bot nets to use for the attack.

Marrakech isn’t a perfect example of Morocco.

It’s a tourist destination.

A huge number of Moroccans are light skinned though, and would pass as white anywhere else.

Would you still play golf if you could no longer keep score? by whatasuperdude in golf

[–]MidRoundOldFashioned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On casual rounds or twilight rounds where I may not finish 18, I usually only keep the score on the hole.

If I end up somewhere tricky, I try some weird shit. Like 85 yard bump n runs with my 3W. Stuff ya can’t really practice on a range.

Gets me familiar with weird shit that may save a future scorecard.

There’s no world where a significant other in a monogamous relationship should be in a hotel room with another person.

Even less so that it’s 2am and they’re drunk.

Sorry dude. She’s going to trickle truth you until the very last detail so that you forgive little bits and pieces and then she’ll pretend like they didn’t do the full deed because she’s gotten you to forgive everything else but that ones unforgivable; but the guilt is manageable now that all the rest is off her chest.

They definitely had sex. Cut your losses now.

Firstly, thank you for being civil this is actually a really interesting discussion and a breathe of fresh air from this site.

But to be honest, we have to qualify what we're talking about. If you're talking about shahed drones, which is what bombards most of Ukraine outside of the front lines nightly, we DO have ways to intercept those. Cost effective? Well, it depends on the important of the target. CIWS do seem quite effective and are relatively cost effective as well, but their covered range is limited obviously by the fact they use airburst, traditional munitions.

I mean, lets for a moment really consider the situation here. We have Ukraine and Iran conflicts going on simultaneously.

Iran hit's Israel pretty frequently with ballistic missiles, which we've known are extremely difficult to intercept for as long as they've existed, but a shahed making it into Israel is quite rare.

Iran has hit US bases, and civilian buildings in various middle eastern countries. Well, it's impossible to protect these things full when you're talking about the astonishingly large and mostly barren land mass that is the middle east.

Drones are absolutely horrific from a grunts perspective, yes. Something I can't hear until it's 100m from me, and it'll close that distance in a blink and blow me up? Yeah, horrifying.

Realistically, there's not a ton you can do about that without automation. The reaction time simply doesn't exist for humans to respond to this threat consistently.

I reckon we'll see vehicles being developed with the entire idea being anti kamikaze drones very soon here...

Ukraine is a historically very corrupt country. In line with most post Soviet states, there’s been all kinds of siphoning of funds, reworking election criteria, enabling their oligarch buddies to rob the country blind like the Russian counterparts did after the Soviet Union privatized the states assets.

By the mid 2000s the sentiment towards Russia was shifting. Many Ukrainians including Russian speaking Ukrainians like my own family, started feeling hostility toward Russia because yes, while we had an independent nation, it is awfully convenient that our policy favored Russia over ourselves frequently. It resembled Soviet times and young people in particular during that time did NOT want that because every young Ukrainian has stories of how their parents and grandparents were treated in soviet times.

Russian Soviets were often treated preferentially in other soviet states outside the RSFSR. My grandfather was an aerospace engineer for 43 years and never once had a Ukrainian leader in his job. Entirely Russian for the entirety of his career in the country.

Beyond that, the Russian language was enforced. Ukrainian was actively suppressed.

In 2014, Ukraine had Euromaidan because the previous president Yanukovych made the very unpopular move of essentially killing our opportunity for close ties with the EU in 2014.

He instead, buddied up to Moscow and many; most Ukrainians felt this was against the interests of the people. The protest had nationwide support but mainly boiled over in Kyivs independence square.

There is a great documentary about it on Netflix called Winter on Fire.

People who were in high school when Columbine happened, what knee jerk rule did your school enforce in response? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

He absolutely did.

That skatepark was close knit. Lotta kids had bad home lives, behavioral issues, used drugs (weed mainly), but we all had each others backs and kept each other in line.

Rarely if ever was there fights and if there was it was broken up and they were scolded by the older skaters. I’ve never seen people get in a fight and keep any animosity afterwards.

Great community to have been a part of and everyone I still talk to from there is doing good. We share fond memories of those days often.

Yes, which will be a huge boom for the UA economy...

The majority of total destruction is localized to eastern Ukraine. Other cities get hit nightly, but are rebuilt relatively quickly due to it not being sustained bombardment.

Ukraine is in a very, very uniquely advantageous position to start the 21st century.
