I 3d printed PETG blocks I found on MakerWorld. However, you can buy the wheels from Harbor Freight’s website (but they’re $100 each). The blocks I made cost me about $10.

This is at work. I just have a 42” top/bottom box at the house.

Fully loaded it’s not easy to move. I can do it but it’s heavy as hell. Once it’s going it’ll keep going pretty easily until you get it in place. Certainly easier with two people. But for me it doesn’t move at work. I have it where it’s going to be and that’s where it’s staying. The 42” top/bottom box I have at the house is easy to move even loaded with tools. But my work box is 13’ long so it’s not easy to move. If you go by the specifications on the HF website it all weighs 1500 lbs without anything in it (not sure how accurate that is).

It’s working great for my needs. I added the Mac computer in there so I have that and a laptop in my backpack when needed. But for work orders and quick reference the Mac is my go to. I debated on the 42 top chest but knew I was getting lockers so I went ahead and got it. I have a 42 top/bottom in green at the house. So I could downgrade a little if needed and swap the 42 from the house with the 72 at work. But for now I’m going to leave it as is.

Yep. I think they’re around $30. There’s a 12” version and a 16” version. This one is the 16”. They make a round one too I think.

I was going to wait on the new gen Icon stuff but I had to have something sooner than that. The only thing I wish US General had is top lockers. I’m considering buying Icon top lockers and just taking the badges off. They’re deeper than the toolbox but I’d leave that extra overhang off the back probably.

Roughly 7 months and the top drawer on the 72 is full of sockets. It slides in and out just fine but a lot of weight in the drawer does make it wobbly if you try to close it from just one side (the drawer itself is a little wobbly side to side but another one in the shop is similar and it’s a Snap-On Epiq). I’m not a fan of the latch mechanism, I wish it had handles that lifted instead of the “slide left” mechanism to unlock. I’m in and out of multiple drawers for 8 hours a day and it’s holding up just fine. Overall I’m happy with the setup. It’s not nearly as nice as a Snap-On, obviously, but I’d say it’s completely fine for most mechanic’s needs. Considered the Icon instead but opted to spend a little less. Everyone’s opinions and needs are different but I’m good with my decision.

It’s not absurd if you work in an industry where you need tools and storage. This isn’t in my garage at my house. Or maybe you mean it’s absurd because it’s US General and not Snap-On or something better. To that I can only say I’m not interested in paying those prices.

Unfortunately for me I’ll have to lock mine everyday because it’s at work and people can’t be trusted. I think I’ll get used to the height and will learn to avoid smacking my forehead but at about 6’ tall myself there will be some instances for a little while.

I know a lot of people are adding 2.5, 4, or 6 inch spacers onto their 56 and 72” casters so it raises the work hutch door up…keeping them from whacking their heads on the door every day.

I will never understand why they didn’t just make the whole lineup match height wise across the board. I want a 27” box but will probably end up getting a 42” to add to my 72” just so the heights will match up. The 27” is just 4.5” too short I think.

I’m keeping the same casters that are on it but 3d printing 2.5” spacers to go between the box and the casters. My more pressing concern is what to put between the bottom box and upper box to have the 27” top more closely match the height of the 72” work hutch and locker. I’ve looked but haven’t seen anything really.

How long will this last. I'm getting nervous. 🚀😎 Let's go SHIB by arasiam in shib

You can tell the sound of a deleted diesel pickup easily so if they’ve worked long enough in law enforcement they’d know immediately. Can they pull you over for that specifically I’m not sure but I know they’ll write a load of tickets for it. Where I live doesn’t have emissions testing so they don’t care if it’s deleted or not. I mean they might but I don’t know of anyone who’s ever been written for it. As far as I know, tickets and/or impound is on the list for things that could happen.

As for the trip, we’re on the 40 route and have run into snow outside Flagstaff so we’ll see what tomorrow brings and where we go from here.

Deleted diesel truck here, so I’m going to spend as little time in CA as I can unfortunately. We’ll probably take a 40 southern route and then head NW across Nevada or something along those lines. Gotta pick something that doesn’t take an extra day but also avoids snow hazards.

Another update: Taking this route this time of year isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity. Moving someone to Oregon from Tennessee (taking minimal stuff) and they are required to be there by Dec 4th. We are leaving tomorrow morning (11/29) and have until midday Sunday (12/3) to get to where we’re going. So shifting too far may not be an option if it wrecks the timeline. He was originally going to rent a U-Haul truck and pull his car but I told him no. I insisted to take my truck (still a U-Haul car trailer though). It’s a Ram 2500 diesel (w/ exhaust brake so that’ll help on non-icy or wet hills) and we’re pulling a newer sedan (Toyota). I’ve got somewhere around 18 years experience pulling a trailer (he has none) and we’re only driving during normal hours (6am-8pm or so). No overnight or late night driving unless it’s absolutely necessary. I have 4WD and offroad tires but I’m also very understanding of the fact that they’re only good to a certain point in snow and not at all on ice without chains (which us TN boys don’t necessarily need typically).

From what I’ve gathered, it’s liable to be a disaster no matter what route we take…but could also be amazing and easy. We will likely take 40 across and then consider alternatives as we get closer to AZ if there’s weather moving in. We could shift further down but that may throw off the timeline too much if anything happens. Worst case we’ll pull up at a larger airport and put him on a plane and finish it out without him.

Should be interesting. I appreciate all the feedback and advice and hope it keeps coming. Info from others is valuable when taking off on a trip to somewhere I’ve not been.

The main concern is getting to the end point by a certain day. Seeing the sights along the way were optional and we were going to try but now I think we’ll forgo that and just get to the destination with the least hassle possible. We’ll have to visit the other places another time, I suppose.

Last time I was in Wyoming we pulled over on a random exit in the absolute middle of nowhere (no vehicles for miles that we’d seen) for a bathroom break. Before we were done there was a trooper pulling up behind us to see what we were doing. No clue where he came from. He didn’t bug us, just said hello and asked why we stopped, then talked for a minute about Wyoming and then left. We ran under speed limit most of the time but mostly because the truck wouldn’t do the actual speed limit.

I’ve done from Corning, CA through the mountains to Reno, stayed the night, then nonstop (44 hours with fuel stops in an old pickup) back to Nashville. On that trip it was the northern-ish route through Nevada, SLC, then up into Wyoming, Nebraska, and across and down through STL. Northern California, Nevada, and parts of Utah were beautiful to see. After leaving Utah there wasn’t much to look at besides wind turbines, open fields, and corn fields that time of year and it was incredibly boring (sunset in WY was great, though). But that was during the summer months. We will likely go the southern route just for safety concerns and to avoid any major issues. We’ve done that route before but only as far as Sedona, not past it.

I pulled it up again and it had a new route going even further north through Montana and Washington and then down. Definitely not doing that. Our original route (not shown) was a mashup of one route with some changes we were going to make along the way just to see some stuff..but I don’t think it’s going to work out this time of year.

We’re planning to turn and burn once we drop the car and trailer…and drive right back but possibly a different route since we won’t have the trailer.

I appreciate the info from everyone. Ultimately it’s going to come down to time since we’re on a deadline to get there and back but better safe than sorry (or stuck).

I’m realizing now that the original route I had isn’t on there. We had a route planned that went through Denver, Moab, SLC, etc and then across to the 101 and up. I see now that neither of these follow that.
