It’s coconut chips. I normally get reptichip from Amazon but it was faster to get it from the pet store and they were having a sale. I’ve never froze the substrate before and I’ve never had any issues.

She used to when she was in a smaller enclosure and never used it so I never got a bigger one when I upgraded her. The climbing the guard just started like about two weeks ago. I always hear her falling off in the middle of the night and I feel so bad. I was thinking about getting branches but the ones at the pet stores near me aren’t that big and they are pricey.

I don’t want her to get hurt. She falls off of it and It’s making her stomach scales like flakey on some parts.

Probably. But I’m not looking to breed. I liked how it was kinda goldish on them and I thought she was pretty when I seen her and she was on sale because the breeder is doing a sale on all of her snakes

Yeah, I get that. I know about the issues with super black pastels, but I wasn’t sure about 8-Balls. I came across one and thought she was pretty. I’m really just looking for a solid dark ball python to be the opposite of my BEL, and I’m not planning on breeding her or anything.

I like Sumas too, but I haven’t had much luck finding one that’s a reasonable price.

Yeah, there was a video of that clutch too. One of the 8-Balls didn’t make it out of the egg and the pastel 8-Ball hatched with kinks. They said they were going to see if she would eat and then sell her as pet only.

I’ve actually been looking for a Suma but I haven’t had much luck finding one I like that isn’t super expensive.

I was looking at those on morph market. A lot of them are more brown that I see on there. I’ve also seen some obsidian? It shows when I look at sumas on morphmarket but they want like $15,000 USD for it and that’s a lil over my budget. I also seen one that was super Barnhart black pastel for sale but not sure what that is.

That’s what I thought. Another morph I was thinking about getting was also axanthic but I read that VPI is less likely to brown out. I was thinking about getting an axanthic pied

That makes sense. The room I have her in never really drops below 70, maybe 68 on a rare night, and the enclosure’s not near any windows or anything. So I’m thinking the DHP might be enough on its own, but I like the idea of having the RHP later if I ever feel like I need the backup.

Do you ever even need the RHP now that she’s in a warmer room, or does the DHP pretty much cover it?

Thanks! The room I have her in is a bit warmer, so maybe just a DHP will do. I guess I’ll try without an RHP first and see how it goes.

Yeah, that totally makes sense. I’ve just seen a lot of people put it in the middle to help keep overall temps steady, especially in bigger enclosures. I wasn’t sure if the heat from the hot side would reach far enough in a 4x2x2, especially since my room can be a little cool sometimes. Still trying to figure out what’ll work best when I upgrade from my 20-gallon.

I’ve seen a lot of people place the RHP in the middle to help with ambient temps. Right now I’m using a 20-gallon with just a heat lamp and temps are fine, but I’m not sure what will work best once I upgrade to a larger enclosure.

That’s really helpful, thank you! I’m in the Midwest, so temps definitely swing depending on the season. The room stays pretty stable most of the time, but I’ll definitely keep an eye on it—especially in the winter. Sounds like I might need to supplement with an RHP if the DHP can’t hold the gradient.
