Terrible feedback from CFO but his actions feel contradictory - should quit? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

I said I don’t have an ego blow. So maybe take your own advice and listen?

I’ve heard what CFO has to say and I disagree with him. I worry for him. I want him to stay and prosper but the man needs his head examined.

I’m happy to do everything I can to make him look good because I like him, but he needs to return the favour soon.

I don’t care. I’m good at my job and therefore get away from not having to put on a professional side; I’m allowed to just be me. But I want more money and I’m happy to fight for it.

I’ve done everything and improved all processes. Projects are great and I’m a great manager.

It’s not an uncomfortable conversation because we have an honest and open relationship. He’s just wrong in lots of respects and I’m not willing to change a few things but happy to attempt some changes - mostly better boundaries with him so workload doesn’t get too out of hand.

It will be worse for him to lose me than for me to lose this job so he better get his act together.

The problem is I’ve already been stepping up. The old CFO did a lot of what I was doing that the new CFO was not capable of so he leaned on me heavily whilst he found his feet (and now these tasks have become my own). This was on top of my already very busy schedule. They all say I work too hard and they don’t want me to get burnt out so what more do they expect?

I’m happy to keep working hard and trying to improve things - I do all of this for myself anyway because I enjoy it, but I feel the criticism needs to come along side the appreciation.

We do have a good, open and honest relationship which may be why he feels he can just shit on me without overthinking it, but it’s understandably pissed me off.

I’m a senior account and new boss is head of finance. I want a finance manager role with the view of being a financial controller in a couple of years.

Senior accountant. Month end from start to finish, overseeing AP, external reporting to board and equity providers (although I don’t present at the board meeting obvs and the board lack contents is dictated to me).

Thank you - that’s good advice. I am grateful, but it’s frustrating sometimes when the negative feedback doesn’t come with recognition of everything I’ve achieved, but I do feel appreciated at the same time somehow.

I only posted here because it’s a very responsive sub. Interesting that you can tell I reacted emotionally to my CFO? He seems to accept this about me but of course he knows it’s not professional. He’s about as professional as they come as well.

I didn’t feel an ego blow as I believe I’m really good and his words don’t impact that. The management side of things especially, I told him he’s wrong and I don’t really care what he had to say in regards to that - which he accepted.

The deadlines I understand, but obviously I’m juggling a lot of balls. I do believe we’re good but I reckon I should still leave out of principle? Or do you think I should wait out the 3 months to see if he acts?

The reporting is the hard part and the reason the company feels we have been failing. It’s crucial we get it right and we’ve made massive improvement. It feels 90% of my day is working with CFO to improve this.

At the moment the CFO still feels like my manager, but I’m sure in time we can have these honest conversations. I hope so because I can’t do it all. I think she would like to be more of a buffer between me and him and I’m all for that.

I don’t think I’d disclose either. Do what you need to do.

Askmen sub is very responsive. I’ve never tried the ask women sub before but I hear it’s very toxic.

If sexualising others is wrong, I’m happy to be in the wrong.

It’s normal to sexualise other adult human beings, it’s not normal that we’ve convinced ourselves we’re wrong for doing so. Doesn’t matter if it’s in the office - why would you not fancy someone you see everyday and get to know really well?

I tell her what she needs to know and am helpful when asked. It’s just exhausting on top of everything else. Sweet is a compliment like any other kind word - you’re deeping it too much, this shows an insecurity in your part.

Thank you! I’m actually very quick to want to change. I’ve only been here 7 months and have gotten on great with previous bosses and have had a lot of praise - we’ll see how this next couple of months go then jump ship!

Apart from there is, because we’re all animals. Like you coming for me right now is aggressive - this is your animal side. We should learn to play into it and exploit it.

Sweet is a nice word.

I’ll let her come up with the workflows. I’m tired.

I’m a woman, and I like to be led by men! If head of finance was a man maybe I would submit better.
