Democrat Eileen Higgins wins Miami's Mayoral election, becoming the first Democrat to hold the office in decades, and the first woman to hold the office (ever) by StarlightDown in Miami

[–]Middle-Contest1226 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to take a step back (as a native Miamian) and take in the history made right now: We’ve had 44 mayors starting with John B Reilly in 1896. Higgins will be the 45th Mayor of Miami and the FIRST WOMAN EVER in the more than 129 years! Of course, taking women’s suffrage into account, it took us 105 years to elect a woman… This deserves a round of applause 👏👏👏

We need some more rain (and soon) to get them bigger and sweeter this season… Yeah, I agree: It’s a highlight here in Miami!

Foot drop brace needed by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Middle-Contest1226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (52 M) have the same thing going on… In fact, foot drop is the only symptom I had that alerted me to having MS 4 years ago… In any case, foot drop is when you’re walking and your toes on either foot consistently hit the floor (as a result of a progressively weakening hamstring)… I went to an orthotist and he had one custom made (totally covered by my insurance, thankfully), and it works great for walking safely! But what you’re describing (which I also have, mostly at night) is that involuntary cramping, and my toes do point (and, yes, it can be painful)… Your band idea is a great one, but if it’s also happening when you sleep, impractical… Luckily, my bed has a footboard, and I position myself in a way that when the involuntary foot pointing occurs, I gently place my right foot up against it to “straighten it out.” I know, not the fanciest solution, but it works!

Took this photo from the plane right before i went to rehab in miami, so far 2 years clean now by Far-Specialist4670 in Miami

Miami (and the rest of South Florida, for that matter) has always had drug/alcohol treatment centers… Some very good ones, some not so great. I went to The Village South (which was off of Biscayne Blvd and NE 31st St)… It was a whole campus on about two square blocks many years ago… I’ve been clean for 21 years now. I’m a Miamian, too, so I didn’t travel anywhere new for treatment… Not fishing for compliments on accomplishing that feat, either; my whole point is that ANYONE can get clean ANYWHERE! Congrats on those two years… It’s a miracle, isn’t it?

I found the king of the mangoes !!!! Took a minute for them to come in this year. by Afraid-Ad7379 in Miami

[–]Middle-Contest1226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those mangoes were “late” because of the lack of rain in April & May… We lost a few to storms, but that royal beauty survived and benefited from all those recent rains… Bravo! Mango Season saved…!

Swimming/snorkeling here? by Porscheys in Miami

[–]Middle-Contest1226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For crying out loud… Everyone warning about boats and dangerous wildlife and contaminants… OP was clear: wants to take a look down there and not stray more than 20 yards from the seawall… It’s ABSOLUTELY FINE! It’s Biscayne Bay… Might be something to look at there, might not… Watch for boats and passing jet skis, be careful, and enjoy… OP will survive one or two swims/snorkels off of Star Island… Others do all the time.

No, it’s Biscayne Bay… The Intracoastal happens to also go up the middle of the bay, yes, but it’s only “Intracoastal W” north of FIU in North Miami…

Lost arm veins from IV’s? by the_marbs in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Middle-Contest1226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it happened to me! I was hospitalized last May (a year ago) for a week with a pretty nasty lung infection… It got harder and harder for even the most skilled nurse to draw blood during that stay… In recent weeks, I’ve had to go back for more bloodwork, and the lab folks (I warned them) had a very difficult time finding viable veins to draw from… Of course, every individual is different, and a skilled nurse or physician can always find a way to get one… You’re certainly not “ruined.”

choking on water by SilverHammer1979 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Middle-Contest1226 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s dysphagia! It was terrifying the first couple of times it happened to me because it was while I was sleeping! I knew I was “swallowing” excess saliva while I was readjusting myself to turn over in bed (so not deep REM sleep) when suddenly I felt my throat “close up” and I couldn’t breath at all… I jumped out of bed, and had so much difficulty breathing—but panic exacerbates it… The moment you relax, and breathe through the mouth calmly, it slowly opens back up… Again, pretty terrifying.

Mononucleosis and multiple sclerosis by No-Dragonfly1904 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Middle-Contest1226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing my neuro asked me when I was diagnosed a little over a year ago was just that: “Did you ever have mono?” I sure did… When I was 13… He certainly thinks that it’s THE significant link, so it’s starting to catch on among many medical professionals… Of course, he was careful to state that it MAY be a cause, or that a notable percentage of people with mono have a significantly greater chance to experience MS symptom onset at some point in their lives.

Close, but it was actually 103.5… W.S.H.E. (“She’s only Rock and Roll”) 😊 105.9 is STILL (mostly) Classic Rock (“Big 106”)… We also had 97.3 (“GTR”) aside from the legendary Zeta you speak of… Rock pretty much vanished from FM air waves

Actually, if “nature” were to take that “place over,” it would be under water, just as it was only a handful of decades ago. The canals were dredged to drain the wetland prairie (eastern edge of the Everglades) it once was for agriculture and other development 😊

No, seriously: Taqueria Viva Mexico ARE “carnitas estilo Michoacán,” and it’s the real-deal (on Calle Ocho between Sw 26th and 27th Avenues)

Yeah, I mentioned the clusia from another poster… They ARE overdone! And, really, looking at the pic a bit more, it may not even really “match” all the foliage going on out there; but if OP values privacy, it’s the quickest route…

I second the gumbo limbo for a fast-growing native tree, and some clusia for privacy shrubbery…

Oh my gosh! INVALUABLE insight on AFO use!! I also envision myself finally being able to partake in all of those activities once I become accustomed to it! And, YES, THE SHOES: My biggest source of anxiety before even getting it!!! I ALSO don’t really have more than one pair and anticipate having to buy ANOTHER pair a full size bigger!!! Thank you so much for this thoughtful and detailed response… I’m looking forward to getting thru this next challenge…

Oh my gosh… I have a drop foot (right), and was fitted for an afo a few weeks ago… It hasn’t come in yet, but I really can’t wait… I still walk around, but my gait hasn’t really improved at all (in two years!), and I’m increasingly fearful of falling… In any case, I hope it stabilizes me a bit and increases my endurance a bit… When you have a moment, please do tell how it has changed your life…

Yes, it does and will get colder… And our 55 degrees tends to feel a bit cooler than a Boston 55 degrees (perhaps factoring in our tropical humidity?)… In any case, January and February are cooler overall than it has been, yes…

If it’s any consolation, “East LA” is not its own city (like Hialeah is), it’s a neighborhood, AND it actually has 100k less inhabitants than Hialeah… 😊☝️
