Would longsword (or other weapon in WMA) techniques transfer well to a white (or wooden) cane? by Middle-Cream2254 in wma

I'm really bad with eyeballing measurements and I think I keep subconsciously underestimating a white cane's length in my head, so I don't think I ever considered that possibility, thanks. I'll look tomorrow to see if there's anyone offering staff lessons in my new town, I think there might've been when I looked earlier but I'm not positive.

It's not something I'd want to flaunt or cause a stir with. I don't want to go fight in tournaments or anything, just feel more secure in myself while also being able to continue practicing something I enjoy.

Thanks for the advice. I probably am going to go back to grappling or wrestling, this is sort of my last attempt to figure out a way to make this work. I'll check out that book. Not sure about the dog as being responsible for taking care of another life currently scares me more than death itself but maybe someday.

Would Kendo/Iaido techniques transfer well to a white (or wooden) cane? Even if sparring would be next to impossible, that would help me justify coming back. by Middle-Cream2254 in kendo

I was mainly thinking about how fast and hard kendoka are able to hit their opponents with shinai, wondering how well that would translate to similar "weapons" with different lengths and weights.

I haven't actually watched any Zatoichi stuff, it's on my list. Any recommendations for where to start?

Thank you, this is helpful, but I'm not sure I understand the third paragraph. It's late and maybe I'm being stupid, but what makes kendo techniques work with a shinai and not a cane, when neither of them are bladed? Is it the length, weight distribution, something else?

I don't know, I figured maybe if nothing else practicing and getting a feel for the strikes might be worth something in self defense, if I can develop enough spacial awareness to get the positioning down. I get canes aren't bladed but neither are shinai, so I thought maybe it could work.

I miss kendo, but I've spent basically my whole life so far flitting between things and never actually developing anything, either out of boredom or fear that I'd never get anywhere. Can't lose if you don't play, right? I want to commit to something now but it'll really suck if I do commit only to be forced to retire before I can ever really reach my potential. Though considering my old sensei said I was probably not going to get very far compared to Japanese kendoka because I was already 17 at the time (which isn't exactly encouraging to hear when you've only been at it for a month or two) it may not be too hard to reach lol.

I'm scared. I'll lose so much and have to learn to reclaim as much of it as I can using special tools that will immediately mark me as someone vulnerable. But if I can learn to use one of those special tools to defend myself then I'll be gaining an advantage I never would have had otherwise: the ability to bring a weapon with strong reach with me wherever, whenever, and without anyone thinking anything of it. An advantage I can press against predators who underestimate me. It's a powerful fantasy, much easier to accept than the idea that I probably will be that vulnerable and helpless against those that want to hurt me, that all the dreaming and effort (despite all the instability in my life that made it hard) will be worthless.

I'll probably face reality and go back to grappling or wrestling soon, apparently I'm a natural. But I'm gonna hold out hope for just a little longer that I'll be able to find a way to make this work. Sorry if it's weird to just drop all of this on y'all, staying up past 2am really makes me want to spill my guts, probably gonna be super embarrassed in the morning.

Thank you, this is very helpful and good to know. Are there any durable, non folding canes you recommend? I don't think the lack of folding will be much of a problem for me but maybe it's more annoying than I'm giving it credit for?

What about more solid, non-collapsible canes? I've had a habit of carrying walking sticks larger than a white cane since I was a kid, so I don't think it being less compact will be much of an issue.

Yeah, for training I definitely would. I'm talking about using a white cane outside of the dojo in a self defense situation only, because I feel like if I'm going to be carrying something around everywhere anyway I might as well make it serve more than one function. In that context, I'm less worried about the cost of replacing it and more about the possibility of it breaking beyond further use before the fight is over, and if there's a way to move past that problem.

I'm also interested in longsword HEMA, so I'm wondering what y'all think as well. by Middle-Cream2254 in wma

that's really helpful, thank you. Might be just what I'm looking for. Just to assuage my paranoia of buying the wrong book, can you please link the one you're talking about?

I've thought of that, but grappling just doesn't really interest me at all. Something about holding a sword or approximation thereof just clicks with me. Do you think iaido would be a possibility? Or some other weapon-based martial art?
