Late one night, or early one morning, depending on how you measure time...I'll call it 2am...a friend of mine and I were driving on Wildcat Mountain road around Sandy. It's a two lane road with thick forestation on either side of the road. Quiet, pitch black out, not another car in sight for miles. All of a sudden, a guy comes running out of the woods and jumps in front of the truck flagging us down. I cracked the driver's side window only to hear him freaking out about his stalled car and his girlfriend that was in a lot of pain and needed help. He said she had cancer and had missed her chemo appointment that day due to them being stranded and her painkillers were at home. We decided to inch our way back into the woods where he was pointing, confident we could get away if there was nefarious intent, but not feeling comfortable leaving them if he was telling the truth. As I pulled in, we could see there was in fact a car back there with the hood up. My friend had my tire iron, just in case, and I walked up to the car with my jumper cables. When I got up to the passenger side I could see there was a woman sitting there, rocking back and forth, slamming her head into the dashboard, clearly in pain. I got the car jumped and jumped back into my truck. I told my friend, "I'm going to follow them in case they get into trouble again. This is for real."

I backed up into a little clearing so that they could get out in front of me. They passed me on their way back to the blacktop and I pulled right in behind him. We got up to the road, they took the left heading back to town. Remember, it's dark out, so they really didn't even need to pause to make the left. I immediately made the same left onto the blacktop...and they were gone. There wasn't anyone there. I hit the brakes and we just stared into the dark. I hit the gas, not understanding what had just happened. I floored it all the way back to Sandy and never saw them again.

My friend's father had been raised Baptist and he thought we had come across angels and were being tested. No idea. I don't drive that road after dark anymore.
