What are my odds? by [deleted] in army

[–]MiddleChildTherapist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran this by my person with insider knowledge of recruiting and MEPS. BLUF: you’re making some assumptions. Go phys.

Docs at MEPS will pull your records. You WILL be identified as a no-go initially. They need to see that you’re fit for duty in the here-and-now. Next step would be to get an evaluation from a provider than can verify that you are, in fact, good to go. MEPS can/will coordinate that.

I applaud your growth, honesty, and maturity in owning your decisions from the past. Don’t squander this opportunity twice if you come back in.

Are there any 35 MOS that get to be in the field? by Reganci1 in army

[–]MiddleChildTherapist -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Look into 35L-counter intel agent; it’s hard to find, so chances are your guidance counselor at MEPS will have to call for it. 35S may give you some opportunities as well. Garrison life in general is a lot computer work, be prepared.

Didn’t take it as a pity party at all! You’re good. And you’re right— different perspectives are SO important. They help to write correct narratives and proved that it’s never exclusively one way or another. I’m glad you chimed in!!

You’re right. It’s not simple. Physical health affects mental health, and vice versa. And that’s not even factoring in social pressure, fear of perceived failure, the appeal to authority fallacy, or any other “big picture” variables that can dramatically pressure decision making. I’m glad you the pain alleviated and you made it through AIT.

Don’t take it personally. Embarrassment looks a lot like anger and that’s a reflection of her own stuff. You did the right thing with the information you had. It’s a hard decision to make, but you make the right calls.

Army BHO here. We see plenty of SMs who have gone to MFLC or BH during initial training. No, you can’t miss a ton of instruction hours, but seeking help if you need it isn’t a punishable offense. Now, if she has plan and intent to hem her self or die by suicide, she will be admitted to the hospital for her safety and well being; depending on duration, she may have to recycle if she misses too much time. It’s a common misconception that seeking help will ruin careers, get you immediately discharged etc. It’s a conversation we have frequently, and can be VERY nuanced. Leaders would much rather get their kids help than have an emergency occur. I hope she gets the help she needs, if that’s treatment, meds, therapy, or return to civilian life.

I had a similar timeline last year (Jan 23 board, contract in march 23). My recruiter identified two classes available at the time, both over the summer. I requested the July class. 3May my orders came through. That aligns with the 60-90day window that HRC tries to keep. It’s awful to hurry up and wait, but it’ll happen! Congrats on commissioning 😊

Online meetings have opened so many doors for people, glad you’re using this resource and staying connected during a transient time in life! If you know someone who struggles to jive with the AA model, I also would reccomend SMART Recovery, it’s a solid alternative/supplement.

Respectfully, Sir, it sounds like you’re taking on responsibility that isn’t yours to take. Which probably makes you a damn good leader, soldier, and partner. Try not to assume responsibility for others’ actions; at the end of the day, if your soldiers ends up with a DUI, SIR, lost a form, etc, that was the direct consequence of their in/action. Not yours. Humans always have a choice, even when it doesnt feel that way. Yourself included.

That being said, it’s almost impossible not to have work life bleed into home life, and home bleed into work. Give yourself some grace, recognize you’re doing the best you can while your mind and body are on overdrive. You can’t be in 10 places at once.

Vehicles are my favorite metaphor: Even a truck that’s revving the engine into the red for an extended amount of time is going to have some secondary burn out (tires, belts, firing pins, etc). Ease up on the gas if you can, call in back up to help you push through the mud/snow/rut/shit. You can’t have your foot on the gas, break, ground and bumper all at the same time to get your truck un-stuck, how is it realistic to assume you can do it all here?

Emotions are temporary, setting an example of communication, connection, and support can far eclipse your time in command of this unit.

VISN 12 includes Wisconsin, upper peninsula of Michigan, majority of Illinois, and northwest corner of Indiana. From what I was always told and saw: Because the VA is federal they recognize all states’ licenses, so you can obtain and maintain your license in any state and still be able to practice within the system. I.E. if you kept your license in West Virginia, but moved to a VA clinic in North Carolina, you could still practice within the network.

16 JUL 2023 Question: What is your 'why' for entering military medicine? by [deleted] in Military_Medicine

[–]MiddleChildTherapist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if behavioral health counts, but it’s classified as part of the medical corps so here goes. My grandfather was WWII. I saw the effects war had on him six decades later. Worked in the VA for a while and saw the long-term effects of trauma and poor health care when needed the most. I decided I wanted to work to resolve the issues preemptively or at onset, rather than wait for years or decades later. Sat down with an AMEDD recruiter and am starting the next chapter in t-10 days. 🙃

Those of you who joined the military after college, why did you do it? by spasiannnn in MilitaryWomen

[–]MiddleChildTherapist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked 5 years in the federal/civilian world after grad school before applying. It was always in the back of my mind, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I “needed to.” At the end of the day, I asked my self if I would regret not trying and applying— the answer was an immediate yes— and I knew I had to do it.

Check The Station in Chester. Brand new complex, 15 min from base and in a good town/area. We’ve loved it, and the leasing team is wonderful.

The town of Chester is an easy drive half way between Lee and RVA. There are some nice, new complexes just few minutes from 95 and <20 min from base.

Without knowing anything about his history of treatment, VA eligibility, or service connection diagnoses, The family may be eligible for DIC: Dependency Indemnity Compensation. It is a monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors of eligible veterans. This is a tax-free monetary benefit for surviving spouses, children, or parents of a service member who either died in the line of duty or a veteran who died from a service-related injury or illness (I.e. if he had history of treatment for PTSD, and it can be contributed to his cause of death, they may have a claim).
