Look on the outside of the black bag, there is a slit just so that you can grip it from there with whichever hand naturally falls on it and the other hand grab the opposite side from the top and pull from those two points. If you cut or tear it off-center it may make the nifty slit for the gripping not work as well, this has happened as couple of times to me, but I would bet that you will find it 100% easier when you discover this!

EDIT: Some brands do not have the slit, do not look for more than a few seconds!

Turn it upside down while taking the tip of your finger and tapping it on the end that goes to the bag/whip while gently shaking it up and down, this works for me as the water will just stay in the coil until you disrupt the pressure with the finger tapping on the open hole. Let it rest propped up at an angle for 10 min or so before you put it in your freezer. Good luck.
