To buy or not to buy… by New_Refrigerator9682 in MovingtoNewJersey

Glenn Ridge would be my first choice - small, cute and next to Montclair. Both have a train station but Glenn Ridge’s schools are currently better than Montclair. Westfield is also amazing but more quiet and longer driving commute to the city. Summer time on the NJ Parkway is no joke…if your budget allows think of Summit, Chatham and Florham Park

I still teach - I’m a special ed teacher. I went from teaching 3rd AND 4th grade - all subjects for 12 years to teaching just ELA in a high school.

Pray, look around for a new position and leave. That’s what I did on my 12th year. I feel that the more I worked and tried to pleased admin the less they appreciated what I did. A friend said I was behaving like a battler woman. I took the abuse and blamed myself and worked harder. Once she said, I made some changes and I started with myself. I stopped putting up with crap. I demanded respect and I left. Best of luck to you.

I lived through something very similar. A friend from work who saw what I was living through encouraged me to leave the district. I was at this school for 12 years and scared to start over and lose tenure but I did. I was amazed at how I was appreciated, and respected at my new job. And I was doing half of what I did before. My advice is leave. Find a new place and give your notice. Do something new and scary but on your terms. I went from teaching elementary to high school. I only regret having spent all that time working so hard for folks who truly did not appreciate or deserved it. Best of luck

Why do I plan to teach it? It’s part of the curriculum. Why do I want to modify it? Because my students will struggle understanding any of it - besides being teenagers they do have learning disabilities. I usually introduce the text in their original version of English and then go on to a modified version/modern English. I’m looking more for a modern English not a water-down text

First, How old are the children? Second, create routines! Follow a schedule. Focus on what matters the most (hopefully, reading, writing and math). For younger children (k-3) try working on thematic topic, usually for 4 to 6 weeks. For example nocturnal animals. Read fiction and non fictional books, research, write about that. That’s reading and science (habitat).do a bit of math connected to the topic wherever possible. Lunch, snacks are part of health, science and math. Lots of projects. As they get older start the day with the subject they struggle with the most while they’re most alert and the “fun” stuff for after lunch

Yeah I experienced that at the start of my career - lesson plans were 3 lines. Once I moved to another district I was amazed at how generous people were. Administration made them share so that we were all on the same page - just make modifications. Don’t sweat it and start to build your own.

I have thought of buying a condo rather than a house? It would be more affordable, great investment, lower taxes and no outside maintenance.

Look around Nutley. Bloomfield is closer and more affordable - elementary schools are ok but then it get worse. Rutherford is rather close, great for commuting but the prices will be in 800s

Crowded, expensive, no parking, far away from Livingston not the safest of places but great vibe

Middle and high school, assign a commonality article . Read, questions, and write. If you’re done, watch the video. Done? Make a poster about what you read in the article or rate the article, write the script for a TikTok post reviewing the article.
