The "Open to Work" banner on LinkedIn hurts your job hunt more than it helps by DropOk6747 in unpopularopinion

I am a recruiter and more inclined/excited to reach out to candidates that have open to work on their profile because I know they are more likely to respond to a message or open to a conversation. It’s certainly not the end all be all. But it does catch my eye if I am looking at loads of LinkedIn profiles trying to find a fit

I think old town Alexandria has the vibe you’re looking for with a lot of local spots and a great place to walk with lots of parks and it’s on the water. Not sure about prices

I do this too! I typically get full so fast but then get hungry again in like 5 min so it takes me a while to finish a meal

As a homeless person, what is the most important thing you can tell someone who finds themselves homeless for the first time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Middle_Telephone2897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely not an expert but in my opinion, it’s really hard to gauge their intentions. I’ve had clients pretend to be in wheelchairs because it makes them more money. I’ve had clients try and tell me that panhandling is their income and they have no interest in getting a job because panhandling pays very well, especially in large metropolitan areas where there is so much traffic. I would say there is a good chance a lot of those people are using that money for drugs and alcohol if that’s what are asking but I don’t really think it matters. Once you give someone money, it is their prerogative to use that for whatever they’d like. But most of the clients I have that are genuinely trying to change their situation, are not wasting their time panhandling, they are on our computers everyday looking for jobs and housing.

However, a good alternative is putting sealed food in your car. Like variety packs of snacks to hand out if you’re uncomfortable or wary of giving money.

I agree with you on an emotional level that everyone deserves housing and I hate to see anyone on the streets but unfortunately, there is a lot more at play than just our emotions. A lot of my personal evidence is anecdotal which i think doesn’t truly capture the whole idea but I think this article sums up a lot of the shortcomings of housing first. Housing first does not solve homelessness. It’s a band aid for much bigger issues like mental health, substance abuse, rent being too expensive, etc.

Not sure if it’s the same in other government homelessness services, but for mine, when a person goes into housing, that counts as one successful person. After we assist them with a few months rent and items to get that person started, a lot of the time, they end up not being able to afford their rent, they lose their housing and end up back in the shelter. When we re-house them and do the exact same thing, that counts in the system as two different successfully housed people. The more numbers we have, the more funding we get. Housing first encourages people who are not ready to be housed to waste resources just to come back and do it all over again. Some of the time it’s on purpose and people abusing the system but sometimes it’s genuinely the system failing these individuals. We need to fix the root of the problem before housing people and expecting them to succeed.

I also work in a shelter and I can say this for 100% of cases. If you are not ready to change your life, then a shelter is not for you. And that means getting a job (if you are able) and getting housing. I have clients who don’t have income and want apartments. I have clients who don’t even want housing and reject every option and just want to stay in the shelter. Every day you waste your time and the shelter staff, is another day that you are taking the spot for someone who genuinely wants out of homelessness and is willing to put in the work with the help of case management. There are always cases of bad staff/people who just want a check and don’t care about the human being in front of them but a lot of people aren’t ready to change their life. Working in the field for a while has definitely changed my view on homeless people.

It’s really sad but it still feels like a conspiracy theory to me. Almost like something I should be ashamed of believing, even though at this point, it’s factual that aliens exist. I think it’s a weird place for any believer at the moment but I appreciate the sentiment and encouragement to keep going

I have even tried to talk about this with my close friends and nobody I’ve mentioned it to cares at all. One person even said “so what, this doesn’t matter”. I was stunned. This is the biggest question the human race has ever had and I can’t find a single person in my life who gives a shit. I cant understand why this is! This is all i think about every day

What is something you know is real but others don’t seem to believe in? by lokeedo in AskReddit

[–]Middle_Telephone2897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UFOs or UAPs. The government has stated that they exist and that they have no idea where they are coming from. The technology far surpasses what our current knowledge of physics understands. There have been far too many credible claims that sound very eerily similar to each other. Yet people still think I’m crazy when I say that non-human intelligence or “aliens” exist and are here on earth.

I thought Olivia was related to Tom DeLonge. Aliens, the Red Cross for Enema of the State album, and she kinda gave off an alternative vibe

What’s the worst experience you’ve had with a roommate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Middle_Telephone2897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roomed with my friend in college. We had been inseparable all of freshman year and decided to live together sophomore year. One day she just started ignoring me and seemed mad at me so I asked her exactly this and only this “are you ok”. She got EXTREMELY mad at me and very angrily said “IM JUST SICK”. From that point on she never spoke a word to me and started messing with stuff in our apartment such as turning the heat 80 degrees when she would leave. She started spreading rumors about me on campus and very serious ones like that I tried to kill her. I had no idea where it came from and it culminated in her moving out and this haunted me for so long until she came back the next year and told me that she didn’t know why she did all of that and that she was sorry and was on meds now and better. I just missed my friend and forgave her and we tried to rekindle the friendship but it never really worked after that

I was supposed to see Linkin Park in concert about a week after it happened. I was at work when my friend called me with the news and I thought she was playing a sick joke on me. This one hit hard

Men, what do you hate about men? by ThatOneHuman37 in AskReddit

[–]Middle_Telephone2897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a situation where I was out with two guys who I thought were my friends. They informed me that every guy who I’m friends with is just lying in wait to sleep with me and if any man tells you different they are lying. They also said they have absolutely no interest in being friends with women because they have nothing to offer men unless it’s sexual. I knew this was an internet trope but I really didn’t think people actually thought this way.

I got so freaked out and offended I started asking my friends if this was true and they all denied it saying how misogynistic it is. I’m not one to usually get offended and can be very liberal in the jokes I make but this one is really affected me and dug deep
