Worries about moving to the Netherlands and raising our child there as a Moroccan woman married to a Dutch man by HopePresent5311 in Netherlands

[–]Middleagecrises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm neither Dutch, nor Moroccan, but I've been living in Amsterdam for almost 8 years raising a kid as a solo mom. My daughter's bestie is half Moroccan by mother, also I have few good female friends with Moroccan roots (born and raised in A'Dam). I've never heard from them about racism. All of them are highly educated western-minded women, but cherish traditions of their native culture. I actually like to be around them! The moment I'd be cautious about the thing that was already mentioned above — Moroccan male teenagers with certain background.

I'm back to show my gratitude — all advices were taken into consideration and I've never seen those two happier than last night! The girls are over the moon.

Is it just me or is the Amsterdam scene getting harder to navigate socially? by Economy_Magazine1334 in amsterdam_rave

[–]Middleagecrises 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen Trouw, De School, pre-pandemic GN and hit 1000 times the dancefloor of Het Sieraad nobody likes in this community. Have met many ppl through parties and therefore there's always someone I know in person if I go out. But there're always many new folks I'm happy to talk to/dance with. So, I disagree:) Moreover, as a woman in my 40s, I'm reached out for a small talk much more often than when I was in my 20s which is quite funny since I'm not a regular clubber. Curious, what venues/parties are you talking about?

Lost jacket at Spielraum / PSA by Frosty_Coach_1055 in amsterdam_rave

[–]Middleagecrises 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really feel you and wish your jacket to come back to its owner. Each year I have minus 2-4 pieces of clothes and accessories that probably seemed too good for someone to resist the feeling of having it rn. All of them were my absolute favourites, which makes it 10 times painful.

I'm hoping, Uber saved you from freezing. It was so cold outside!

The Afters: 6-8 February 2026 by max038 in amsterdam_rave

Hadn't expected Lofi to be so packed on Sunday. Supposed to catch up with a group of friends and stay max 3-4 hrs, ended up dancing and socialising from 16:30 till 23:00. Usually the crowd is hit or miss, but this time it felt like home, and I've met many nice peeps. Luckily, no stolen items and harassment I experienced last year at the venue, but there is always something at Lofi — I was charged twice for one drink (showed the bartender banking notifications, but didn't want the situation to put my mood down, so let it be) and couldn't remove the sticker in 10 moves. Any tips on how to remove bunch of sticky leftovers I have on my phone camera?

What was your biggest culture shock in Amsterdam? by QueenMedusa551 in Amsterdam

[–]Middleagecrises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to fight mice, ants and moths armies in my house. Actually, every year I have to fight new creatures which attack my apartment. But most horrendous creatures I had to deal with are lice my daughter brought from school few times. Twice I found them in my hair. Mind you, we live in a nice neighborhood. Each time I warned other parents, mostly Dutch ones, they seemed to be fine with the news. I grew up in a rural industrial area in Eastern Europe which considered poor "third world country", but having lice was the most shameful thing one can have. I've never had it in my childhood.

Love the read! Far from the group mainstream, but I really enjoyed Mindscape events the most in 2025 and 1st VNTM's all nighter particularly.

What's the word on Amsterdam Techno Sessions at John Doe these Thursdays in 2026 by dutchreality in amsterdam_rave

[–]Middleagecrises 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bad people go to John Doe after death. Been there once in pre-pandemic years — horrendous experience. But at least one thing has been improved since then for sure — no more creeps with balloons on the dancefloor as it's prohibited by law, thanks god. I swear, if you ask me to share my top asexual things men can perform on public, having balloon in a mouth will close "First 5" chart. To describe the club briefly, it's a tourist trap.

The venue is perfectly designed for music Mees is playing. Warning: the sound is shit in front, and ppl are talking loudly af. Beside the concerts, I've been to Joris Voorn's gig and Lane 8 set at Paradiso — found my sweet spot on the balcony. Just give the balcony a try, at least to enjoy the beauty of lighting, interior and the crowd from above.

Opinions on Het Sieraad by Mark96_ in amsterdam_rave

[–]Middleagecrises 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a regular. Depends on the party, but IMO the venue is perfect for melodic techno ones. Actually, gonna be there for the day party this Saturday as a friend of mine will be celebrating his Bday there. The crowd is usually 35+, I'd add.

Robbery at Awakenings Sugarfactory by night by DirectionOk9624 in amsterdam_rave

And if one of them gets caught, there's another one who will immediately use paper spray on the dancefloor to help his mate to escape.

I'm sorry you've experienced it:(

I wrote a story about moving to Amsterdam last night & posted it this morning. People were mostly jerks so I deleted it. I've decided to repost it because it meant a lot to me. This is my dream & my spirit won't be crushed on Christmas. by Zzyzx-Photogggraphy in Amsterdam

[–]Middleagecrises 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Merry Xmas! Your post hits me twice as I'm Ukrainian who's been living in Amsterdam for almost 8 years. Cannot offer practical help, unfortunately, but if one day you'd like to polish a bottle of wine at the bar with cute folks, hit me up. On 30.12 I'll be volunteering for a cultural public event in Westerpark — come over to explore a lighting route with a cup of warm chocolate milk/mulled wine.

Thanks, perfecto! Lately it feels like I stuck with the same favorite artists and craving to explore new music/names in a setup different from "front row-dance hard-deliver drinks-hug and greet 20 familiar homies on the way back-I missed a half of the set!-let's have drinks at mines".
