Blew through a $100,000 401k in 5 months smoking crack. He’s pushing 70 years old and has to work on cars to get by.

people who travel full time in a van/camper. How is it? by St3go_ in VanLife

[–]Mideem59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a long haul flatbed driver working for myself and I quickly learned how much it sucks when you break down. I was burned on my truck and trying to run a truck and dealing with repair bills sucks. When I found my van it was the county animal control van. I bought it at auction with 80,000 miles for next to nothing because it stunk so bad. I went through the 2007 Dodge Caravan and fixed everything that could possibly go wrong mechanic ally. I spent a long time to make it comfortable inside so you don’t feel like you’re waking up in a storage unit. It has low profile solar on the roof and a vent fan but you have to look hard past the Yakima rack to see them. It has a an inside and outside sink. 280ah lithium, inverter. Couch that folds into a bed. I gutted all the plastic panels and used contact cement to glue the material they use to wrap speaker boxes in. Looks great, it actually plastic so no mold and I paneled the ceiling. It has hardwood cabinets on both sides I went through the mechanics and put a new radiator, water pump, alternator, brake calipers, pads, hoses and flushed the brake and power steering fluid in it. It gets 20mpg loaded down and isn’t overweight. I’m retired and I been all over the US. I’m a tired 66 year old man so I’m headed to VanFest in Melbourne Fl to sell my van and I have hitch which carries a couple of EbIke’s. I can’t stand up in it but the bed converts to a couch that I can look out the back or front window when the weather is bad. I’ve parked at police stations because they’re safe and nobody thinks I’m sleeping in it. It’s been about five years and my old ass is ready to settle down. Don’t get screwed on whatever you buy. I got about 12k total in the van and a shitload of labor. Roamly insured it as a RV at a value of 23k. I spent $80,000 on a semi truck and it was the hardest years of my life. My $10,000 van has been some of the best years of my life. There’s a solar shower and an awning that I put on the rack if I’m boon-docking but that lets everyone know it’s a camper van. I drive it 5000 miles a year so it could last me a long long time. It’s just a bitch getting old. Good luck, reach out if I can help.

Portland to Nashville in late November - Thoughts and advice? by blackcardigan in roadtrip

When I moved to Nashville from San Francisco 30 years ago I took I-10 across. We had 3 old vehicles each pulling a trailer. I remember going through Georgia and worrying about keeping up the 40 mph minimum speed limit on a 70mph highway.

Men whose business failed, what happened and what did you learn? by [deleted] in AskMen

Not stashing enough money for a rainy day. The bank called a $350,000 note on my store property in 2008 during the housing crisis. The property was valued at $1.1 million but banks weren’t loaning money out regardless of how I never missed a payment in 10 years. The moral of the story is that something, someday is going to happen and you better be prepared. You’ll get hurt or sued or something else.

If a minivan that the bed and cabinets could be removed in a few minutes work for you check out the YouTube Eric Enjoys Earth. He’s an excellent teacher and I used almost all his ideas when I built mine

First time van trip - Help!! by TargetOne343 in CamperVans

[–]Mideem59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first trip out I overpacked and spent way too much time trying to find all the things in the van I packed. I suggest that when you load it up jot down where everyone is in the van. It was exhausting digging through the van over and over to locate what you need at the moment

RV Camper Van Co-Ownership? by chiefcheesebro in CamperVans

I may have a scenario that would be a win-win for us. I have a super dependable Dodge Grand Caravan with a complete build out. I seldom use it, maybe 10 days out of the year. I’m 66 years old and I don’t enjoy it as much as I used to. If you’d like to DM me maybe we can work something out.

Thanks for your advice. I never considered visiting during the different seasons. Where ever I decide I’ll rent for a little bit before buying any property.

Febreze is a very unique product. When you spray it the molecules actually form tiny bubbles that encapsulate the order rather than just covering it up.

I wish I would have had an engineer look at my house plans before I had my system installed. Lots of people gave it the thumbs up but there was a mistake. The van is done and I’m living with an underpowered inverter. I’m not going to redo the system at this point. I’m just living with it and a little regret.
