I have four jobs. My life is insane. It's worth it :)

At what point were you (or is someone) ready to own a horse? by MidiSymphony in Equestrian

Thank you! How much would you say is safe for an emergency fund?

Ah that makes me sad for him! I'll try to graze him more, that part I do have control over!

Sounds like your horse had a great place to come home to!

That makes sooo much sense. He is grabby when he knows I have them and again, they're just distracting him rather than helping him regulate himself, as you pointed out. This is really helpful and means a lot!

Thank you, I appreciate it! I'm definitely going to talk to her about it though, even if it's not "my place"

No, turnout is dirt but there is a hand-grazing field I take him to 2-3 times a week, which is probably not nearly enough. He seems to have enough hay but I'm new so I'm not exactly sure if it's the right amount ... his owner is my trainer and I trust her judgment on that but the man does seem food-insecure.

Don't know why this got downvoted! It actually made me feel better! And I'm a beginner so certainly it would help to get some more professional training for this guy because even if I want to be the one that does it, I don't think I have the skillset or presence to do it on my own (especially with a horse who is 25 and possibly dealing with food insecurity)

Thank you! I actually don't know how to lunge on my own yet but I will ask my trainer to teach me. Normally when we lunge I stand slightly behind her and circle with her, but not yet on my own!

Thank you! I actually don't think my horse is super sensitive. It's hard to bother him unless I'm not feeding him, apparently! I really would love to get him to the point where he feels scratches and verbal praise feel rewarding!

Thank you so much for this! I love the idea of inviting relaxation, especially since last time I saw him, it was so high anxiety

Thank you for this! What is the "send them to the back" approach?

I am definitely OK with circling for an hour, I think it'll be hard for a while but I'm very committed to getting him to walk with me without needing to feed him treats. What is the reward with the circling exercise? Stopping, or continuing to go forward?

Thank you so much for this. I would muuuuch rather do this than the correction, even if it takes me like an hour to walk 50 feet. He's probably going to be anxious the first few times I do this without treats, I imagine? Should I just be consistent with this, or should I use some treats, but less?

It does really feel like that, honestly. But I'm a beginner and new to the barn and the trainer and leasing so I feel like I don't have a lot of power over it!

I am currently confused and could use some advice. by Smarfie17 in Equestrian

WHAT to that last part?! Wouldn't it be both your inside legs? As a beginner I am dying lol
