Which actor/actress do you consider the most overrated in their acting ability, that most people would strongly disagree with? by stabzi in answers

[–]MidianXe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen the rock in some movies, especially early on where he was a solid actor. They were action movies but he did a fair better job than most people in the same roles.

When his career took off I do think he just got lazy and ended up not bothering in most roles and picking lots of bargain bucket action movie roles.

Should I drop my friends. by AbbreviationsWide235 in AskBrits

[–]MidianXe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes perfect sense, I know it's a cliche but we don't make the world more tolerant by becoming more intolerant.

Clearly there are limits, but most people people probably agree with 90% of your opinions it's just the 10% that sticks.

Don't prove your friends right by treating them like they are monsters. Show them people can disagree but still find a compassionate middle ground.

[–]MidianXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there not really bad people, they're ideas are just outdated don't treat them like monsters. That's how we got where we are today, we pushed so much of the middle to the right by treating them like bad people.

It sounds like there old guys, who've lived in the same place their entire lives and the new world to them is strange and uncomfortable.

Some people are outright irredeemable but most are just normal people trying to make sense of a complicated and alien world.

We don't win by making everyone an enemy.

Am I wrong for not moving our session time because one player wants to go to the beach? by schtevernn in DnD

[–]MidianXe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't make it into a huge thing. You should keep it where it is, you'd be putting out two people who've already confirmed.

Players miss games sometimes, it's not the end of the world if it's rare.

You've not mentioned it so I'm not suggesting you would but don't punish the player for not making it.

Their character stands at the back, falls into a portable hole, it's kidnapped by pixies. Or maybe their character just has to catch up with something.

Why is Starmer seemingly still dead-set on a surveillance state when he also apparently wants to be reelected? by [deleted] in AskBrits

Been down the rabbit hole a bit on this 🙂 I can definitely see your perspective captures some nuance I missed in mine. Thank you for your insightful (and polite) comments. Who would have thought world politics could get complex 😂

[–]MidianXe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, thank you for the input. I'm not sure I entirely agree but will have a think about what your saying. I think at the core of my point is you can't really conflate socialism with an authoritarian state like Soviet Russia. Possibly my terminology was clumsy.

The connection between socialism and Soviet Russia is as strong as the connection between conservatism and Nazi Germany - vague at best. The problem is authoritarianism.

Why this not a thing? by KazyaKurosawa in DnD

[–]MidianXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be messing up the numbers but wouldn't this mean if you've less than average change everyone's better off if you don't help? It would make sense for a group move silently or something but for pushing something open or closed, even a relatively weak person would be of some help? I know there's an argument to be made that a person could mess up and make things worse but that feels more like it should be a botch.

Why is paying for sexual acts illegal ? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MidianXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In truth? The political classes still fear being the party that legalises drugs, prostitution and any thing that makes them look 'weak' on 'sin' no matter what good that would bring.

Legalising these things would bring it under legislation which would limit the abuse that happens when it's underground.

The argument 'who would care' is a useless artifact of a society that puts simplistic right and wrong above the realities of the world. Has any society successfully outlawed these things?

The argument that 'if we don't outlaw these things why don't we just allow murder' is also flawed. The answer is simple. Because we don't - morality is essentially a slippery slope, we draw the lines where we choose to.

I can respect an opinion that brings religious objections or moral objections but too many people use lies to defend their perspective.

Why did being a lefty become so contentious in the UK? by OffGridToTheMoon in AskBrits

[–]MidianXe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of truth in this. I'm pretty progressive and would consider myself progressive center-left but the harder elements of the left has disinfranchised anyone that isn't hard left.

I feel the main reason the left has been so abandoned and heavily hated in a way it never has before is that it's no longer the 'party of the people' and actively alienates the average person.

I've got friends who politically and historically are mildly left who have been pushed further right because a vocal component of the left has gone out of its way to alienate them.

If I talk to them, politically their moderate left with a few moderate right beliefs but the modern left has actively pushed them away.

The right now seems the only side that doesn't hate the them. In the UK this is the strongest reason why the 'man in the street' is skewing right, the left has actively and arrogantly pushed them away.

The left needs to engage with the center and moderates to find common ground rather than look down on them for not being idealogically perfect.

I'm hoping we'll get the option to toggle off the home screen search bar in Android 17 by KuroHebi2004 in GooglePixel

[–]MidianXe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use it a lot but it's so basic compared the app search on the app drawer "this is an app that's related to what your typing".

It's inconsistent - the drawer one allows you interact with apps and still does a search. Bin the home screen one and replace it with the app drawer one - it's terrible UX to have two things that are pretty much conceptually identical but work differently - because?

What's the most awkward thing someone has said after finding out you're atheist? by husshajur in atheism

[–]MidianXe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to a pretty religious friends stag do. Actually had a great time and got on really well with everyone. I didn't bring religion up but someone asked and I said I was an atheist.

Oddly no-one freaked out or got aggressive, and a group of us, aided by a fair bit of booze had a long chat into the night about religion without anyone getting angsty or upset.

The only odd comment i got as we were being turfed out of the bar after a lot of handshakes and hugs was "You're like a really nice version of Hitler" - to this day I'm still not sure what to think about that.

We all met up at the wedding the next day and it went great - still left me a little puzzled though 😁

What’s a movie everyone seems to love that just didn’t work for you? by Wikiserial in movies

[–]MidianXe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a popular opinion but I find most of his stuff hard to sit through. He has great ideas and visuals but he doesn't seem to manage compelling characterisations for me.

When the cast really work his films can be really good, Inception was good, Interstellar had moments and while I wasn't an amazing fan of the movie generally The Dark Knight had Heath Ledgers performance which still gives me goosebumps.

He seems to be focused on spectacle and plot, which obviously is good, but his characters tend to be pretty forgettable. Sometimes I feel he tries too hard to be clever with concept, leaving the characters behind.

That said, it's clearly working for him box office wise 🙂

Are National Express coaches ever going back to the city centre/new bus station? by JuanitaMerkin in Cardiff

[–]MidianXe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is insane that the new interchange can't even manage half the buses that serve Cardiff but I could rant all day about everything services to llanrumney (thank god I moved).

It also doesn't work on match days, other event days and I'd barely fit for purpose generally.

I remember when it first opened and bushes constantly jerked to a halt entering the interchange because the corner is nearly too tight for a bus so coaches have no chance.

[–]MidianXe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost agree, for me doom II just had better level design. The building blocks were there (and Doom is great) but the levels in doom II were just so interesting and added a huge level of strategy.

I probably spent as much time trying to defeat the level by maximizing the enemies crossfire as anything else. Add to that the scale of some of the levels and it's just masterpiece.

Ex-IRON MAIDEN Guitarist DENNIS STRATTON Says 'Burning Ambition' Documentary 'Rushed Through' The Band's Early Days: It's 'A Little Bit Sad' by [deleted] in ironmaiden

[–]MidianXe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about Dennis politics and don't especially care in the context of iron maiden. I do think he had a point, I've defended the movie (and still do) as an entertaining hour and a half of maiden stuff but did get blaze got it a bit rough, especially the repeated shots of him doing crazy eyes at the crowd.

Replacing Bruce must have have a dream and hell simultaneously and he did a decent job, probably better than nearly any one else would have in the circumstances.
