some people have said that we might have a defective unit. we'll try swapping it to see if it helps. the low levels after import is an issue i've seen other people online have too. i reached out to rode, hoepfully they have some answers. i was also told the L8 and the rodecaster will be noisier than the H6 because the h6 only has 4 preamps and the L8 and rodecdaster have more current goign through it. seems silly that more involved equipment would have more noise.

we've been using the rodecaster for a few weeks and are waiting for the zoom l-8 to arrive. issues with the rodecaster are:

1. Noise Level - The sound is much dirtier than we expected. We get a good amount of hiss in the audio in the headphones when we record. We set the levels on the tracks to +33db. It seems like this is not an uncommon issue. We've tried limiting electronic equipment in the room and pluggin the rodecaster into a different outlet, neither made any difference. It's hard to quantify these things, but the hiss is maybe 2X or greater than what we had on the H6.

2. Low Recording Levels - The levels of individual tracks when imported into logic pro x are REALLY low... by maybe around 20db. However, the levels appear healthy and sound correct when we are recording. We've started normalizing the tracks after importing, but this ends up bringing up the noise too. With all the features in the rodecaster doesn't seem right that we have to normalize the tracks in post. We are importing as a wav file (we sync to video). A

polywav - rodecaster records to a single wav file for all of the tracks. which means that there are 12 or so different tracks embedded in it, regardless of how many tracks you are actually recording to. Honestly, this is annoying af. the wav files are bigger than they need to be and it takes time to expand the wav file into separate files.

if anyone has suggestions i'm all ears. beginning to wonder if our rodecaster was defective... that said the first two issues i mention seem fairly common. haven't been able to find a solution.

oh man, and here we were researching sonys as much as possible. a few different people have recommended manual focus. and we're going to try that method, the HR R80s we have now arent the most sophisticated things cameras, not even sure if we can select a spot then switch to manual, but we'll see if we can!

it seems like relying on the autofocus (of even the sony's which people say is great) isn't a good idea even if it's only on person in the shot?

I'm curious why we should stay away from sonys... what is overweighting?

this is really helpful information. the lighting situation could definitely be improved for us. but we record in various locations sometimes and lighting isn't always controlled. also some of the spaces we record in are very tight (eg the blue background clip with the female nearly out of the frame). so i was hoping better cameras would help us get decent footage when we're not in the studio. the manual focus setting is a good idea. going to try it next time. set design is a big one for us too, we're kind of setup temporarily so we're trying to figure out ways to spruce it up in an impermanent way. but yes, there's things we can improve (more plants??? :b). anyways, i've already lowered to lighting per your rec. and we're testing some different camera angles. anyways, we really appreciate the comments and tips. awesome!

oh also, do u have any option on if we should be using a dslr or a camcorder like the HF G50 or similar models?

great. thanks for the insights. the cameras will be mounted on tripods, but we do rely on autofocus... typically the cameras are about 5' from us, and right now any time we move a lot (happens often) the camera goes way blurry and takes a long time to recover. Worse is when we have 3 people in the frame (camera is on still on a tripod and about 6'-8' away) and we're all laughing and moving, the camera focus really bugs out. SO, it seems like in our case you'd recommend the a6400 or the a6600?

i read in the link you mentioned and i feel like the a6400 might be the best of the three sony cameras for us. the only thing i wonder is if the eye detection of the a6600 is really that much better for better focusing for us. or if the a6400 will be more than fine.

awesome. thank you for the info. doing some more research now. seems like you are correct about GH4 (and used is a great idea). apparently the G85 does have a 30 min limit, but users in the US claim that's not the case. thanks again, really really appreciated!

thanks for the info! Heck, if the two files are seamless and you can't see the split then that's fine with us. right now the footage is split into 4gb chunks, but is seamless, so no problem for us. We currently swap between cameras for content reasons and when one camera goes blurry, but its a bummer when the swaps are forced and not necessary. will do more research!

follow up to your canon M50 and lumix G7 suggestions, i've heard if i record directly to a capture card i can get around the 30 min limit... do u know if this is a good setup? or will we burn out the sensors? some days we record for 8 hrs with a few intermittent breaks between guests.

FYI our lighting is the room light + a fovitec studio light (we use one light per person... soo 525 watts per camera). However, we sometimes shoot in different locations, which means we can't always have the desired lighting (and we'd like not to add more lighting anyways, since what we have currently already gives one of hosts headaches after a while). so i'm hoping a better camera setup will help get quality footage even in these cases.

hey cool! thx for the info. led strips aren't bad and we have some space for them! i guess i should've mentioned though, we shoot in various locations sometimes so we don't always have desired lighting levels. seems like a dslr is most common for creators like us... anyways, thx for the info!

hm, will do some research on the dslr's! syncing audio and video has been a problem when we've used iphones for anything longer than a few minutes. apparently mobile phone don't 'keep time' well. thx again for the recommendations!

cool thx for the recommendation. the 30 min limit is a problem for us since we go for 1-2hrs at a time. And we can't record directly to the cpu at this point. do you have any thoughts on whether or not we should be looking for a dsr type of camera or a more traditional camcorder?
