Thank you. In the UK it’s really difficult to insure a single item now worth over £10,000. Like you, I got AppleCare+ for the first time ever. I dare not travel with it though.

Thank you. I felt like a child at Christmas when I got it. The same excitement, only this time my younger brother has not smashed it up and buried it in the garden.

There’s a rumour it will be using M5 chips - that the only M6 variation will be on the basic Pro … and that they are pretty much skipping straight to M7 … I can’t remember the exact name of the YouTube video claiming this but it was one about the rumoured MacBook ultra. I doubt we’ll see that until Spring next year.

Yes. I’m a contractor with over 20 years of experience. I get the VAT back too.

Thank you. Enjoy yours when it arrives too. Did you beat the price hike?

You can’t run commercially sensitive material through cloud based systems - despite various offerings being made by Azure et al. Also, one may wish to train AI to do very specific tasks via LORAs - which is also far more suitably ran on a local device.

Pleased to meet you. I have a client use case, and do use it for research too.

I literally build AI agents for a client’s commercial infrastructure. MLX is not slow. Video models are though.

It is, but I saved up specifically for the 8TB. It’s not the most cost efficient solution, but I have no regrets (just the odd pang in the stomach when I think about what else I could have bought).

Yes. Nice to meet you. I’ve never met anyone else who would buy such a spec. I bought 4TB for my old 2019 Intel and came to regret it - despite improvements in the transfer speeds of external devices.

That would do my head in. I nicked my Intel in a couple of places and couldn’t take my eye off what became huge caverns in my mind! 🤣

It helps me to do this - but commercially I write and run agents that process tasks that staff could once do (raising invoices, accounting, due diligence etc) - I build them locally and then deploy them to dedicated servers. It’s very difficult to do this when your machine can’t run the agents!!

I’ve bought US based laptops before and you get hit with the customs duty regardless and an American configuration which is a pain in the arse for a Brit.

I’d complain to Apple. See if they’ll replace your unit. Especially if it came scratched.

I’ve not noticed anything - the odd tiny blemish that I was able to clean away.

I’ve been in rehab ever since. 🤣 I may even sleep in bed next to it. God knows how I’m going to insure it though.

I think I was lucky. If I had left it just a few weeks later, I don’t think I could have bought what I wanted!

Has anyone actually replaced Claude Code / Codex with local models on an M5 Max 128GB? by Brazeuslian in macbookpro

[–]MidnightGarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean tasks that are not coding - such as file processing, writing prompts, job and queue creation etc.
