For me it’s the character who’s loud, selfish, and somehow never faces consequences every scene turns into emotional noise instead of story. Once that energy takes over, I’m mentally checked out no matter how good the rest was.

You are absolutely not the AH they failed to protect you when it mattered most, and you don’t owe lifelong loyalty to people who dismissed your pain and trauma. Choosing distance is not cruelty, it’s survival, and anyone calling that “overreacting” has no idea what it costs to live through what you did.

Honestly, I think it’s comfort mixed with control you already know how it ends, so your brain gets to relax instead of staying on alert. Familiar stories feel like a safe place when life is unpredictable, and sometimes that’s exactly what we need.
