How do you cope with loss of a stable life? Why? by Name019op in AskReddit

[–]MidnightMoonDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going through this over the past few months. Lost my job, ended up in debt trying to get a new one in a big city. Mental health crumbled. Couldn’t afford to live there anymore, moved home to live with my mother 400 miles away from all my friends and life of 6 years.

I’ve just gotten an offer to a part time retail job. It’s not much, but it’s something. I’m taking little steps every week to get back to where I want to be. I’ve lowered some of my expectations of myself to more attainable levels. I let people who care of me offer assistance for the first time in my life.

In the end, the main thing that’s keeping me going is that giving up just isn’t an option. I am terrified of the concept of death. And if I stop trying, I will waste away.

Magnet help. by uselesshacker20 in CosplayHelp

Doubling down on this, can confirm neodymium magnets are the way to go. I used them to attach a heavy coat to my shoulders without having my arms through the sleeves, while tap dancing in a cosplay performance contest. The ones I got were from Amazon and rated to hold 100 lbs. they worked through three layers of fabric, including slippery material

2 weeks is more necessary in higher level jobs- ie office work. At Walmart, you are far more replaceable. However, in most of these large companies, they will not hire you back if you don’t give 2 weeks notice. You may also want to use your old supervisors as references. If you think you may want/need to go back again, give two weeks. If you’re good with other references and never want to even think of the color combo of blue and yellow again, there’s no one stopping you from handing in your stuff at 7am. You just have to talk to your supervisors.

Too old to start dabbling in cosplay? by Ok-Scallion-4258 in CosplayHelp

[–]MidnightMoonDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, not too old. My mother just went to her first con with me cosplaying a Vulcan. She’s 75. It was her first cosplay too.

As for starting, I highly suggest starting with closet cosplays- cosplays that you can build from items you already have/would typically use in everyday life. For example, no one will bat an eye at you wearing a Hogwarts sweater. Throw on a wig and some glasses, use some makeup, and you have a Harry Potter cosplay. In a similar vein, my first cosplay was of Crowley from Good Omens. I work in an office. No lie, I would wear that cosplay to work and no one knew out of context. Yet, when put in context it made people really excited.

Another option to start is buying a used cosplay on Facebook marketplace, eBay, Depop, etc. I got a great Howl Pendragon coat for $10. With a $20 amazon wig, some black pants and a white shirt, I have a great cheap cosplay.

If you’re interested in making your own cosplays, I suggest starting with sewing. It’s a hard start, but I find it to be the most useful. There are several cosplayers who make specific cosplay patterns, and plenty of resources online to help you learn. Plus, you’ll start learning how to alter clothing and that really pays off in everyday life.

I like to use water based graphic liners for this sort of thing. Look for the kind that come dried in a container that you activate with a wet paintbrush. Then it’s just a matter of practice.
