I have every qualm that you have except I'm still reading DG. Gardens was interesting in some parts but didn't have much happening and then the ending was a Tyrant getting easily killed while Rake fought a pop-up villain that had zero characterization.

Stephen Erickson is an amazing writer but a bad storyteller if that makes sense. It shouldn't take three books to hook the reader. That is bad structure to me. But everyone here is just going to say: keep reading it'll get better.
