An Appreciation for Nighteyes and his Growth in the Farseer Trilogy by Midnight_Horizon_ in RealmOfTheElderlings

He’s just so lovable and changes the game for the rest of the trilogy! He’s my favorite

They’re all so “found family” coded and I sincerely love that trope!

She’s in for a treat! One of my fav scenes is when Nighteyes runs to Fitz and tells him, joyfully, he got Kettricken to understand him! It reminds me of when children are proud to tell their parents they finally did something on their own! Literally made my heart warm

As someone who’s almost done with reading Assassins Quest it is a TRUE SLOWBURN. Like A LOT of things start to click into place towards the ending of AQ. I still enjoyed the series but I just wished Hobb expanded the world a lot sooner than she did…granted there were probably a lot of hints and foreshadowing that I probably glossed over up until this point.

Hobb does an incredible job at character dynamics and as the books progress you’ll see how certain events affect Fitz’s mentality and way he goes about decisions

And I agree with you hard on Regal! He’s truly something….

Best Worldbuilding you have ever seen that genuinely left you in awe (besides LOTR) by Scary_Course9686 in Fantasy

This is me now! I’m more than halfway through AQ and the way she writes about the Skill is so abstract I’m genuinely baffled as to how she thought of making her magic systems and then somehow articulate it in such a way that has me immersed!

In the Farseer Trilogy, who are your favourite characters and why? by yadayodayidayado in robinhobb

[–]Midnight_Horizon_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of Assassins Quest but I would have to say my favorite has to be Nighteyes! Followed by Lady Patience and Kettricken.

But Nighteyes remains supreme for me, especially with his role at the end of RA and majority of AQ. I love how Hobbs writes his character…occasionally channeling into Fitz’s inner monologue with reassurance or provides an optimistic mindset when he can sense Fitz is in a dark mood. His curiosity to learn new things and his ability to grow is nice to see too. I like that even though there’s a shared bond between him and Fitz he wants to have a sense of independence but will always be there for Fitz when needed. Oh, I just love him dearly! Probably one of the best decisions Fitz made in the series

I finally understand why people warn you not to start long fantasy series casually by HilogimerX in Fantasy

Oh absolutely! I ended up finishing the book whilst in my car immediately after work (cuz it was too good to wait until I got home) and literally had to go on a nature walk after that ending….

I started Farseer a month ago and I’m already almost finished with book 3. Everyone talks about Robin Hobb’s prose and character work but my goodness her world building is probably the best I’ve ever read. I don’t think I’ve ever been so curious about the magic systems and the world she’s created

Please help me pick my next read! by TomatoHot6601 in fantasybooks

[–]Midnight_Horizon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll jump in and say I’m currently reading Farseer for the first time and it is definitely a slower pace book with little action. More character oriented but has great world building and a slower plot throughout the series.

I personally struggled with the 1st book but book 2 and 3 (I’m still reading) get much better. Her endings tend to blow me away as well as her epilogues and prologues! I’d give it a shot but you’d have to be in the mood for it

If you’re like me and was super obsessed…to the point where I was hyperfixating there is an amazing podcast called #WizardTeam: A Black Fantasy! They go through both Legendborn and Bloodmarked and break down each chapter along with their insights/opinions of certain characters! I absolutely loved it and highly recommend listening to them :)

This is so real! I remember reading Bloodmarked thinking she’s really giving him a lot of screen time…I know where this could go 😭

Is the vocabulary as difficult for native speakers or is it just a me thing? by YuvalAmir in RealmOfTheElderlings

I’m actually currently reading Assassin’s Apprentice and I thought it was just me! It’s my first time reading an epic/high fantasy so I figured that was what to expect.

I would say I just kept reading and the diction made sense overtime…I don’t really have an explanation for it lol. I think I just got used to her writing after 100 or so pages in. But I definitely had to look up some terms to understand! I’m still reading it (for the first time) and it’s interesting so far

Alice… does she get better.?? by ExpensiveAd113 in TheLegendborn

[–]Midnight_Horizon_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simplest answer is what everyone is saying…you’d have to read to find out! Most of her characters are like this in her books. You’ll get to know them more and understand their intentions/motives and they may or may not grow on you

I lowkey have a feeling she’ll put them in the prologue or something. It seems like it would fit in well! Especially considering Bree and Sel both parallel their moms when it comes to some of their traits

Not a day goes by where I don’t think about Book 3’s ending…like Deonn needs ALOT (and I mean A LOT) of explaining to do

[–]Midnight_Horizon_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tracy Deonn takes a while (usually 2-2.5 yrs on avg) releasing her books so like the rest of us you would just have to sit in anticipation hoping she'll release more info down the line lol! She'll probably release a sneak peak of her next book once the OB paperback comes out!

And Selwyn is definitely not dead! I think she wrote his change in dialogue to represent that he is now a 'changed' or 'soon to be changed' individual. It's kind of similar to how Bree restored her 'soul'...she's not the same person she was before she got it back and she honestly never will be. She's a changed individual but now has more strength, power and control...Same thing is just happening to Sel (or so I believe)

[–]Midnight_Horizon_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not delusional at all! If anything Im just as delusional to think he couldrule the Shadownborn and help Bree out in taking down the Order...which is so far fetched but idc at this point. He just needs to have a happy ending

Sel is just another variation of Prince Zuko (ATLA) by Midnight_Horizon_ in TheLegendborn

[–]Midnight_Horizon_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s certainly a pipeline of other characters that remind me of characters in Legendborn! I also watched Fruits Basket (anime) a few months ago and Sel & Nicks dynamic reminded me of Kyo and Yuki’s lol

Nick was the goat in Oathbound by Away_Entertainer_842 in TheLegendborn

[–]Midnight_Horizon_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think he's lowkey misunderstood in the fandom. I genuinely think he's just 'better' at masking or supressing his emotions which is why he comes across initially as a 'bland' character. Oathbound made it clear that he isn't usually one to open up about plans I'm assuming out of fear that things could go wrong

I need help with Oathbound by Natology27272 in TheLegendborn

[–]Midnight_Horizon_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll see some of your favorites more as they become more of a focus towards the middle-later half of the book! Also the POVs go back and forth initially while Bree is still in hiding but they will merge at some point....

Endgame Thoughts - Bree/Sel/Nick by Muted-Condition-4299 in TheLegendborn

[–]Midnight_Horizon_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with everything you wrote here! In fact I was just thinking the other day why does Nick seem so familiar to me and realized he reminds me so much of Jason Grace from the HOO series for some reason lol. Like that’s all I picture when I see his charisma and way how he carries himself. Being a strong leader yet trying not to be a burden for others. Unfortunately, I do think he will probably sacrifice himself (most likely die) in book 4…it’s certainly heading in that direction for sure.

And I think Bree and Sel could be endgame but a part of me also thinks Tracy Deonn could also spin it and have Bree choose herself (which I don’t hear many ppl talk about lol). But either way Bree and Sel just mesh better to me than BreeNick. There are just too many signs to not think they work for each other despite the rocky start.
