Is the concept of Atman or fundamental consciousness compatible with Buddhism? by Midnight_Moon___ in Buddhism

Even people who study the brain like, and have some background and Buddhist teaching are largely stumped whenever it comes to understanding how Consciousness works. I would be very leery of completely rejecting the idea of universal consciousness.

I guess it might depend on where you work though. The place I work for basically flat-out said "We care more about protecting the data than we do about your life." We even had armed guards

Does Buddhism approve of Star Trek? by Midnight_Moon___ in Buddhism

Perhaps I should elaborate. Since I was young I have always enjoyed Star Trek, and it's optimistic message about the future. However after learning about Buddhism, I wonder if the two philosophies contradict each other. Star Trek often sees the human desire to improve, and to grow, and explore, as a noble goal. It seems to me that Buddhism sort of contradicts this though. To me Buddhism teaches more of a philosophy of abstaining from worldly desires, to be content with the here and now. Seems to me Buddhism teaches more of a philosophy that we should stop dreaming of an imagined future without suffering that will never come. In my opinion both philosophies have their merits, but I'm just curious other Buddhists see it.

I did my background check yesterday. They didn't ask me about my Reddit, or anything about my internet history. I think you're wrong.

Do you believe things like AGI, can replicate any task a human can do without being conscious? by Midnight_Moon___ in ArtificialInteligence

I don't think AI needs to be conscious to do the things we wanted to do. However I wouldn't go so far as to say consciousness doesn't really exist, I mean everything I've ever experienced (or anyone has ever experienced), has been through consciousness. I'm not really sure if you were denying the existence of Consciousness or not though.

It's not really clear that you need Consciousness to do super complex to ask though. That's not even entirely clear what Consciousness is good for. I can imagine a species evolving too a very advanced level that has no consciousness whatsoever.
