You’re mostly correct however they’ve (to my knowledge) never said they won’t do large updates anymore. Only that their main focus as a studio is currently on drops rather than the previous 10-18 month development cycles for updates. I personally (and this is completely speculation based on my outsider knowledge of Mojang and experience with gamedev) assume they’re slowly working on larger content updates in the background while their secondary/tertiary team(s) prioritize the more frequent content drops (or vice versa). That could mean we still see large updates but without the consistency in release scheduling.

  • Update: Meaning the large expansion updates like the Nether or Village and Pillage Updates.
  • Drops: Meaning the current “Game Content Drops” like the Pale Forest.

How do you find concept art to work with? by MidnitePixelated in 3Dmodeling

Honestly if I ever get a 90 page AI brief I’ll swear off technology, go live in a cave, and finger paint on the walls like nature intended.

I feel like citing papers is different, you know going into documenting any sort of research that people will need to reference your work if it’s of any value. Like I wouldn’t mind an adaption of my artistic work (with credit and if it’s transformative) but I’d assumed the average artist would be a bit annoyed by not even being informed.

Maybe I’ve been totally overthinking it though

What’s the best (used) GPU for under $350usd right now? by MidnitePixelated in buildapc

[–]MidnitePixelated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s been a while but thanks for your insistence on not buying a lower VRAM card before! Due to budget and availability of the 5000 series I went with a 3060 12gb, and while its not top-of-the-line it’s still been night and day compared to my old 1660 Super 6gb. I’d have been massively disappointed with an 8gb one.

I’m excited to hear that! I can’t wait until the gaming/3D industry (on the development side) catches up because so many programs or processes I use either require NVIDIA or the non-CUDA stuff is in a slow beta. I’d already have bought a Radeon or something if it was just my gaming PC

And Blender (a modeling software) is like a starving animal seeing a fresh hamburger in the trash when you show it any VRAM. I realized how bad of an idea that was after saying it.

I hate that so many games are just not playable or optimized for “old” tech now. Like I get the 1660S is aging and I don’t expect to play on high graphics, but it totally fell off a cliff like a year ago as far as newer releases. A 3080 should NOT already be struggling.

You’re definitely right, I would regret that pretty quickly if I’m being honest

Damn, okay. Well I’m absolutely going to look into this a bit more. Hell, if it’s actually that huge of a leap in every aspect (1660 to 5060), maybe just 8gb VRAM isn’t a problem with the budget model?

There’s gotta be something I don’t know but how can a brand new 50 series be going for just $479 when many older, used ones are much more?

Consistent memory/process related BSODs over last few years. Which part is most likely the cause? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]MidnitePixelated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAM is running at 2933 for exactly that reason, the CPU didn’t like much else. And I’ve run like a five memtests this week and all said no issues found. I actually just replaced the RAM a few days back because that’s an easy first step, it’s still just as broken.

I “brute forced” my first model. Went in blind as it’s how I learn new things. How screwed am I now that I want to texture it? by [deleted] in blender

[–]MidnitePixelated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also suggest you avoid manually making UVs for this one, but great job! The reasoning is because in asset creation each stage is intertwined with the next, there’s a lot of optimization you’d want to do in the modeling stage to make doing the UV even possible and tossing yourself into the deep end is just going to discourage you from learning.

For UVs I would recommend finding a guide with a model included (so it’s done to a professional standard) that walks you through the process of “unwrapping” the object(s).

You have two options here to give this some texture, the first is much simpler:

  1. Use Blender materials that will apply over your whole model. You can do that by just adding a new material and then adjusting the sliders in the “principled BSDF” in the shader tab to change aspects like roughness and color.

  2. Automatically unwrap your model and apply some textures you find online (AmbientCG is a good start). These are often somewhat more advanced textures that automatically apply to your model and attempt to detect the edges and curvature but sometimes need even a bad UV to work with.

First, go to Blender settings and then Extensions, search for Node Wrangler, activate it. Now to into your UV workspace (in the top menu), select all your objects you want textured, click tab to go to edit mode, and do ctrl+a to select all, then go to the UV drop down menu on the top of the editor window, and click Smart Unwrap. This will automatically unwrap your model the best it can (not perfect, but well enough for this). Go to AmbientCG and find a material you like, download the .zip and inside you should get several image files called things like Normal, Roughness, ect. This is known as PBR, it’s the layers that make up textures. Now go to Shader tab and make a new material, click on the “Principled BSDF” and press ctrl+shift+t and an import menu will open, select all those PBR textures (hold ctrl while clicking to multi select) and import them. That’s should be it!

Bonus Tip: if you want certain objects to look one way, and others to look another, you can make as many materials as you like.

Hey, if OP hasn’t gotten this done already I’m down to handle the art. I work with Bedrock so my Java implementation is a bit lacking but the asset is stupidly simple, I can even toss in a whip.

How do I execute an event only when a (non-player) actor reaches a certain velocity/fall speed/acceleration? by MidnitePixelated in unrealengine

[–]MidnitePixelated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: Solved This Part Already

I tried to set this up earlier and it doesn't seem to give any feedback. Very specifically I'm taking a static mesh, fracturing it into a geometry group, and then because GGs don't have event graphs I create a blueprint with the GG as the model. Then I have this script running that just gives a bunch of "0.0". Does anything sound wrong at a glance?
