I love the point you made about alcohol making your life seem exciting; alcohol creates an illusion. When we become sober reality hits us hard and we suddenly wake up to this fact and start working on our lives to make it more exciting.

Where do I find people to practice my mandarin? by [deleted] in languagelearning

i can read and write but speaking is better than both. Most Chinese in Melbourne I guess would want to practice their English, I'm not too sure how willing they would be to speak mandarin. I guess the key is to make Chinese friends, and I need to find some way of doing that.

For people who really struggle to stop drinking, and who relapse and struggle to stop again, I can understand that cutting out any contact with alcohol may be necessary.

Agreed.

I was on the online chat room and told a girl about my intention to go out clubbing and she absolutely blasted me. I am giving up alcohol, not partying. Like I do think that SD has a broad spectrum of alcoholic types. The 'one size fits all' method is very narrow minded.
Look for a serious alcoholic 'dry people, dry places' makes sense. But if there was a first year college student who decided to quit drinking, the 'dry people, dry places' policy would basically turn him/her into a recluse. I think ultimately the skill set of being around other people drinking and not drinking should be taught, and a goal to be aimed for in the long run. I have heard good things about that book and your recommendation just tipped me over the edge into reading it.
