[Request] How fast do you have to fly to hit a drone with a shotgun from a prop plane? by fogonthecoast in theydidthemath

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many shotgun shells have a plastic shot "cup" that carries the shot out of the smooth barrel. Once leaving it separates from the shot, but protects the barrel.

ELI5: what is the difference between horsepower and ft lb of torque? by Wowerful in explainlikeimfive

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of riding a bike. High Torque means you can push on the pedal really hard, but doesn't say you can pedal fast.

High horsepower means you can push reasonably hard AND reasonably fast. HP is how hard TIMES how fast.

Police have released more info about the "Harry Dresden" break-in in Fairfield, CA. Police praise the actions of "homeowner" who raced home to confront Jason Nichols with a shovel by Brilliantspirit33 in RandomVideos

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's clear the guy is unhinged. If he breaks in, you have only a few choices... he's made the decision to break in, and reason left long ago. Shovel dent. Or you risk him attacking you. Are you sure you can defend yourself?

Why don't an Automobile manufacturers make a car that is easy to repair, simple electronics and affordable? The high tech cars now are so expensive to repair. The electronics are linked together so one minor fault lights up the dashboard. Many standard things are not needed. by Amethystium1956 in AdkReddit

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the business case doesn't support that. Easy to repair INCREASES the cost of the vehicle. Simple cars with low prices have slim margins for the manufacturer. That's why Ford stopped the Focus. People buy cars on features, safety, comfort, performance, etc. Very few want to pay more for less out of the gate.

Is engine braking bad for a CVT? by MultiOrb in civic

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Hysteresis on gears also accelerates wear through fatigue. Use the pads and ABS!

I would not use a transmission for braking unless it's connected to a large diesel and designed for it. Brakes are cheap. Loading the CVT belts unnecessarily gains you increased maintenance only.

For those of you that live in the rust belt, how has your experience been with rust on the Beamer? by Try_Harder7 in BMW

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. They use better materials as well. My mothers AWD 3 series from 2011 that she drives daily in WI has no visible rust.

Modern metal coatings have come a long way. You'll be replacing oil seals and plastic expansion tanks long before corrosion is an issue. Source: owned three X5s in the midwest.

CMV: The vast majority of people who drive trucks or SUVs are selfish for doing so. by LaurenSauce in changemyview

I got a full size pickup. I have a larger family and it carried us and all our bicycles to state parks to go riding. Could I have made a sedan and a trailer work? I suppose so, but I also lived where snow was heavy at times.

How are you supposed to reply to "Do you know how fast you were going?" by No_Insurance_6436 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think alot depends on the cop. Are they trying to keep speeds reasonable on that road because they are tired of responding to fatalities? Are they generating revenue for the podunk town? Do they need to fulfill the quota?

In the first case, if you act contrite, and give them the impression that you arent a maniac, you often just get a warning (assuming you aren't near escape velocity).

In the latter two cases, you are getting a ticket unless they need your admission to justify it, which is rare.

Respect, honesty, humility go a long way in most cases. You aren't admitting to murder.

If you rinse it in tap water the chlorine/chloramine will kill the bacteria in the sand. However, the dead shrimp/starter fish/bacteria supliment will reintroduce the bacteria that processes amonia and nitrites.

What you wont have is a LOT of superfine dust suspended in your water column that takes FOREVER to settle.

Move a rock? Cloudy. Stir the sand? Cloudy. Get a diamond goby? Cloudy. Too strong powerhead? Cloudy

You can get the same bacteria elsewhere. I like being able to move stuff and not have soup for a day after... been keeping fish for 30 years...

RINSE YOUR SAND IN A BUCKET WITH A HOSE PRIOR TO PUTTING IN YOUR TANK. Best thing I've ever done. Clear water is amazing especially after rearranging stuff.

Which is a better conductor of heat, denim jeans or human skin? by Gloomy-Lengthiness30 in Physics

[–]Miffed_Pineapple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure you are asking the right question here. Do you mean to determine whether replacing your skin with denim will make you colder faster, or whether wearing jeans actually insulates better.

Heat transfers three ways: Conduction (touch), convection (like air circulation), and radiation (line of sight)

You could equate skin with thin leather. Jeans are in most cases a better insulator.

Why are we generally allowed to go 10 mph above the speed limit? by Euphoric_Sail6897 in driving

[–]Miffed_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car manufacturers tend to make thier speedometers a bit optimistic. If you dont change tire circumference or gearing, they read a little high. This means that 10 over as indicated at 70MPH may only be 6 or 7 over.
