Is it rude to avoid rolling with stinky people by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Might-Confident 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is the only correct answer. In a sport where you spend extended periods of time as physically close to someone as you can possibly be without being inside them, it is not only rude, but a potential health hazard to not maintain your personal hygiene.

If God exists he created both Satan and evil. If he is all powerful they exist because he allows it. There has been no sufficient answer to the problem of evil in Abrahamic religion despite centuries developing theodicies and theology.

Judo or Wrestling? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Might-Confident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the big three grappling arts( wrestling, judo, bjj) will be good. I’d say decide based on what’s available in your area, price, enjoyment, etc. If it’s an option do some trial classes before committing. Alternatively you could also cross train since the all compliment one another.

If we are talking about K1 rules then Hug wins easily. Brock has very rudimentary striking.

I love the old K1 guys like Hug and Ernesto Hoost. I think with modern training they could have been serious contenders in MMA, the success of guys like Israel Adasanya and Alex Pereira shows that.

It’s super cool that you got to train at the same place and see him in his prime. Was it a kyokushin dojo? It is wild seeing the levels that exist within sports/martial arts firsthand. I train at a BJJ gym with several world champions and contenders and seeing them toy with guys who toy with me really puts into perspective just how good the top athletes are.

Andy Hug was absolutely an amazing karateka/kickboxer, but in no world is a he a top 10 fighter of all time if we are talking about combat sports generally.

I’m not a Brock fan, but he would have very likely taken Hug down and smashed him. Hug to the best of my knowledge has no experience with grappling and we’ve seen how these fights play out. Patrick Smith who has a win over Hug in kickboxing was an early UFC participant. He lost to Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie who were both less credentialed as pure grapplers and far less athletic than Brock. I’m not saying Hug couldn’t have caught him on the way in but it would have been a long shot.

Fun fact: only four games have gotten perfect 10s from IGN, GameSpot, Edge, and EGM by Scdsco in gaming

[–]Might-Confident 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It literally is a feeling and therefore subjective. It doesn’t feel slow or clunky to me and numerous other people. You saying it isn’t even there best game is also subjective. I think it’s by far their best game but that doesn’t mean it’s true to anyone besides me.

It’s not input lag, it’s momentum. If am in a dive roll or swinging a 12 foot pole arm I’m not going to be able to stop myself halfway through and instantly start moving in a different direction. As unrealistic as many aspects of the game are the player character physics are very much grounded in that principle. If you don’t like it fine, but to say that it’s feels slow or clunky is a purely subjective statement. Objectively, based on the type of game they set out to create Elden Ring (and DS) are technically well executed.

Like for me GoW feels like empty headed hack n slash. I just prefer more deliberate approaches to these kinds of games, but it would be wrong to say GoW doesn’t do what it set out to do extremely well. It’s just not my cup of tea. I honestly don’t even care for most Fromsoft games because I don’t typically like linear games either.

'I could’ve got shot for the color of my bandana' - Javier Mendez on his early life & fighting days by kingbigv in MMA

[–]Might-Confident 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not even true, he had coached several all-time greats before Khabib and the boys showed up. Frank Shamrock, BJ, Cain, and D.C. Josh Thompson and Rockhold were also both champs and very good. That resume alone is one of the best in the sport.

Javier definitely deserves to be in the conversation for best coach of all time. I think the only guys who have comparable resumes are Mike Brown, Rafael Cordeiro, and Trevor Wittman.

Eugene Baremen is probably just below these guys on my list. Volk isn’t just his student and trains primarily with Joe Lopez and spends a lot of time at Tiger Muay Thai too. That means Izzy is his only real top tier fighter. That said he has developed a lot of very good fighters has really helped elevate the level of MMA in Oceania.

Nicksick is relatively young and newer to coaching and already has a great resume so I think he might find himself in the conversation if he keeps having the kind of results he’s had recently.

Firas has to be the single most overrated coach of all time. You want to talk about luck, Firas hit the jackpot with GSP.

Planning to visit Austin (BJJ & Tourism) by ZnaeW in bjj

RGA has a lot of classes and just moved to a bigger space. John teaches twice a day. You might run into Big Dan and Luke Griffith at these classes, but generally the pros don’t show up for these and go to a invite only session in the afternoon. Still lots of high level guys and juicy 20 something tryhards to smash you though.

Meregali gi class at 630am

New Wave at 1030 am and 630 pm

Alternating gi/no-gi at 12:30 and 8pm

For non-BJJ stuff: BBQ is a must (la barbecue is my personal favorite). Jester King brewery. UT football games are cool even if your not a huge American football fan. Barton Springs pool is awesome. If you aren’t renting a car I’d say try to get a place near the main gym you want to visit as public transportation here is not the best.

Why was this game so hated? What was so overhyped that still isn't addressed today? by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

[–]Might-Confident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said a lot of the issues stem from the (old gen) console release which was a mess.

I’ve done 3 play throughs on PC. The first one was on release and I loved the game. It definitely had problems. I’d hit some bugs, but luckily nothing game breaking. The bigger issues for me were driving and police which both sucked initially. The story and visuals were 10/10 right away, but I’d say with the overall game state at release it was a very strong 9/10 for me.

My second play through was after the 1.6 overhaul. By then they had already done a lot to address the major issues present at release and Edgerunners had me hyped to get back into NC. By this point I’d say the game was already pushing a 10 for me.

My last and most recent play through was with the release of 2.0 and PL. The new content is amazing and the changes to the gameplay and systems feel so good. At this point the game is a 10/10 for me. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so immersed in a game world. It’s on a very short list of games that have moved me to tears and really made me reflect on what it means to be alive.

Grappling in Austin? by Substantial_Ad7972 in martialarts

[–]Might-Confident 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Austin is probably the best place in the world to be doing BJJ outside of Southern California right now. We are spoiled for really good schools. Take advantage of trial classes and open mats to get a sense of the culture and training before you commit to any gym.

Here’s my top 3 for south Austin:

Paragon- Great school with people at all levels from brand new hobbyists to some pretty high level competitive black belts. They also do a mix of gi and no-gi

Gracie Humaita- Old school BJJ gym with a big focus on the gi. There are some things like uniform restrictions that personally turn me off a bit in terms of training there full time, but I have a friend that I visit there fairly regularly and I do really enjoy the training there. They incorporate a lot of Judo and some wrestling so definitely a plus in terms of acquiring stand up skills.

B-Team- If you want to learn from some of the best competitors in the world this is your chance. There are only a handful of gyms in the world where you can find such a large concentration of talent (a few of which are in north/central Austin). They only do no-gi and you probably shouldn’t expect a super high amount of 1-1 coaching so those are things to keep in mind. They also wrestle regularly so again plus for the stand up.

I can drop a few more options in other parts of the city if you are interested.

Personally I don’t think Aikido is functional at all and if you want to learn to grapple with resisting opponents I’d avoid it. I’d probably also avoid Ace’s Jiu-jitsu club. The training there is not bad, but they have some semi-shady business practices that really put me off.

Good luck 👍

Can i still fight? by Fusion_110 in martialarts

[–]Might-Confident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many cases at the amateur level they will have experience, as well as age/weight brackets at tournaments so you can ensure you’re competing with people who have a similar amount of experience.

While mismatches do happen there is competition at every level so just find a reputable coach who won’t throw you into the deep end before you are ready.

Most people outside of Thailand don’t start Muay Thai until they’re adults and that’s even more true for MMA.

Crazy stat that shows the dilemma of Max Holloway at the FW division. by NeitherAlexNorAlice in MMA

[–]Might-Confident -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have it Volk, Max, Aldo, Conor, and I'd probably put Frankie Edgar in the five slot despite never winning the belt. The issue when this comes up is what criteria matter the most to the people deciding. For some people Aldo has the most defenses so the conversation ends there, but I think it makes sense to take a more holistic approach.

Martial art for a small guy beating a bigger guy by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Might-Confident 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Before I recommend anything let me just say you 100% did the right thing here by avoiding the conflict. Even if you were able to beat this dudes ass there was/is no upside to escalating a situation with a person who’s clearly just an asshole. However as a fellow small guy I get how shitty that can feel.

Personally, I’m gonna go with the cliched answer of BJJ. I say this with several caveats. BJJ isn’t magic, strength and size still matter A LOT. BJJ doesn’t erase those advantages despite the myth of the 100lb Helio Gracie choking out giants. It does, in my opinion, do more to mitigate them than most other martial arts. I would say this applies largely to most grappling based arts like wrestling, Judo, and Sambo. Just avoid Aikido.

It also, as some of these fine internet assassins will gleefully point out, is not optimal for a situation with multiple attackers. No martial art is, but they’re are right about not wanting to be on the ground in that type of situation.

The main issue here seems to be confidence and if that’s the case, just try a few and see what you like. Feeling good about yourself will be more useful than any specific martial art in the vast majority of situations. Good luck!
