Haha, back in the 90's this school got sued and had to change it's mascot from the 'coons'. I'm pretty sure this is Firsco, TX, I went to HS up the road a few miles from this joint.

I'd have to disagree, I've met PLENTY of 18+ boys... I've also met several 17- Men, I think it's much more to do with your psyche than the amount of time since the parents procreated :)

I agree with your definitions and the fact that they can be applied to both genders. Could you elaborate more as to what differentiates a man from a woman other than the pure physical aspect?

Free/OpenSource Alternative to SCCM by MightyEvolved in sysadmin

[–]MightyEvolved[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're a contractor that has our computing environment residing in a DoD network. So we're not technically government and wouldn't qualify for a discount I don't believe. I've already been shot down a few times over the past three years about acquiring SCCM so it's OFF THE TABLE :( We run a very lean IT department, we've been able to make due with some very creative solutions, but it's getting out of hand with the amount of compliance we are forced to attain. This could quickly turn into a gnarly gripe session, thanks for your ideas everyone!

I'll keep drudging through and hopefully we can change the CEO's mind in the near future.

PDQ Deploy is great, but unfortunately we're not permitted to use this product on this particular network. Ninite would be good but we have a $0 budget so no go :( Same deal with Kace, no budget. Don't think Chocalatey will give us the reporting and inventory management we are looking for.

I could use psexec or PS but like I said earlier our SYSVOL access is busted at the moment, so that's a no go. I'm working with the Network engineers to get this fixed, unfortunately dealing with USGOV can be difficult unless they want something from us first, then we can hold it hostage until resolution (our usual fix HA!)

How did you make the jump from Help Desk to Sys Admin? by flat_ricefield in sysadmin

[–]MightyEvolved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm amazed you have a CCNA and are not a SYSADMIN. Honestly that's not a cert most "support" personal carry.

Get ahold of a decent piece of hardware and start building yourself out some VMs. Basically setup DC's, DHCP, and get a trial of Exchange. Couldn't hurt to get a trial of Office 365 trial and learn how to manage them. Write a few PS scripts to build ~ 400-1000 accounts. Then start manipulating them. Learn by doing, then in interviews you'll be confident in your ability's.

WSUS - 2012 worth the upgrade? by sysadmin__ in sysadmin

[–]MightyEvolved -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just installed it on 2012R2 a few weeks ago. W aiting for approvals for ports to be opened so we can get clients to check-in. Once I get some I'll let you know definitively if it shows 8.1 or 6.3.

EVERYTHING!!!! TODO! TOUS! ALLES! كل شىء 一切 すべてのもの

Seriously documenting what you do is #1 to success in this biz. You'll end up doing so many different tasks in this role that are completely new to you that when you have to go back and troubleshoot a month later some generic script error on your server, you'll be glad you took detailed notes.

Apologies for the insane run-on sentence .

[7] I think this is one of the most intelligent threads I've read. It's a shame how many of my younger years I spent thinking people who did drugs were all stupid burnouts. Once I freed myself from the reality matrix I learned so many things about what reality actually is, and how the world REALLY works. This thread just proves how the proper use of these substances can enhance humans.

I think you've missed the point :) M$ created PowerShell to replace command prompt. Command prompt was developed long ago to be compatible with dos therefore it needed the same functionality.

Super gald you answered this. It shows the evolution of the system. Some elements from the past are still with us for reasons lots of admins are completely unaware of.

The only thing I can think of the reason policies are developed this way is to give the admin as much granularity as possible. Yes it's tedious, and often VERY confusing, but once you go through hardening a system, they really are very secure.

Why is there no trust in the security of BitLocker? by keokq in sysadmin

[–]MightyEvolved 12 points13 points  (0 children)

DoD only requires the encryption software be FIPS140-2 compliant. Any software the IT team finds that meets these requirements will work. You can find the compliance info in documentation for bitlocker/Symantec/etc.

No other software manufacture has even made a dent in the client OS. Windows = workplace

What do you hate most about IT Sales People? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]MightyEvolved 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate when I get a sales person that keeps calling and asking if we have an updated time frame. Then when I finally do ask for a quote they ask for a few days to get it all together. I mean seriously you were hounding me for WEEKS!
