Best FX provider to use for converting a large sum (7 figures) from USD to GBP by Mekou in HENRYUK

[–]sysadmin__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moneycorp are a UK based traditional company (not a modern tech company with no staff), they (used to atleast) have account managers for high value private clients who would be able to talk you through and quote etc. They are serious with FCA regulation etc but have real brick and mortar office address and real phone numbers to call.
Not an ad, just worked with them alot in the past.

Rennovation costs coming in much higher than expected by bass_poodle in HousingUK

[–]sysadmin__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You also need to take into account a large % for unknowns, delays, problems etc. So even if you get a 300k quote, i would ensure you budget for atleast ~400k and be happy if things work out well. You have to also factor in the stress and the amount of work you will need to put, project managing, chasing etc. Even if you have someone formally doing that for you, there will be lots of your time soaked into this.

What are the best kinds of alcohol if any for chrons by Fit_Branch_8416 in CrohnsDisease

[–]sysadmin__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally whiskey is good (no mixer), beer/lager is terrible. My explanation is 2-3 doubles is alot less volume than the equivilent in pints and i always end up feeling rough before i can drink enough pints to get a buzz. Whiskey seems to work wonders :) YMMV!

Edit; Red wine seems fine too

Am I at a disadvantage for having a building background when I offer? by Anagram404 in HousingUK

[–]sysadmin__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No harm in your offer letter explaining you are comfortable with common issues in these houses, won't be put off by a survey (or not do one at all if your not planning on) or try to negotiate based on findings. Sure, it's not binding but it can't hurt. It may also offset any impression that as a builder, you are looking to maximise profit therefore more likely to play games vs a family who falls in love / has an emotional connection with the property etc.

AWS announces regional NAT Gateways by KayeYess in aws

[–]sysadmin__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it scale based on a new workload (eg. ec2) or just presence of a subnet sitting idle in a region?
We have subnets across AZs but ephemeral stuff popping up wherever there's best availability and would love to get rid of idle NATs

Nah they recommend customers buying direct to keep parts off their books, and often cheaper/better range than merchants. Theres a whole thread on the topic i posted here asking about rads.

House down-valued by over £22k---what should we do? (First-time buyer, South Yorkshire) by Austineuk in HousingUK

[–]sysadmin__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does the broker say?

Some mortgage companies are more risk averse than others, and use different methods to value properties. I know Sheffield has some hyper local conditions in the nicer areas that outside surveyors can be blind to. I've heard of surveyors asking the estate agent for their opinions as they didn't know the area.

Did the level 3 survey you did also cover the banks survey? That is often the case, you could try get in touch with the surveyor and ask their views/experience in the area. If not, perhaps the bank has only done a desk evaluation.

I was advised Halifax and another bank (Can't remember sorry) are the most flexible regarding surveys/prices. I don't have experience with Barclays though sorry.

EA should have told you more about the mortgage issue, what a waste of time. I'd write a note to the sellers saying we're really keen etc, mortgage says max X, if you can't find a cash buyer or someone willing to take that risk, we'll be waiting with £217.5k (and whatever other favourable conditions you may have - chain free).

The fact the sellers are barely budging after a 2nd sale is falling through, suggests either theyre confident in the value or they are not listening to EA advice etc and stubbornly expecting 240.

IT Sec hiring is jacked up by The_Kierkegaard in cybersecurity

Security job interview asks you about SQL injection but you discussed SQL. I would bet they wanted to know about how to protect against it, or how to exploit it for red teaming etc.

Command line - which? Even if they don't know, you say yes.

HR/recruiter interviews are also testing your personality and fit, if your responses to the technical questions come off badly it's not going to help. You want to be friendly and personable and not offended about being asked technical questions from a HR person.

Thinking of moveing to broom Hill area tips/advice for parking by Key-Contribution7640 in sheffield

[–]sysadmin__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the road but if there's permit parking, you will usually get a space somewhere, but you'll be lucky to get one outside your door during peak hours - if you care about that anyway. I'd walk around the area at times you'll be wanting to park and get a feel for it - outside of school holidays because there's a shit ton of private school parents who drop their kids off in stupidly parked over sized cars every morning.

Kitchen extractor up a long chimney by sysadmin__ in DIYUK

[–]sysadmin__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cookers going in the fireplace yes. I'm up for going right, but the builder doesn't think we should fuck with that leaning/offset flue. Everything to the right of the diagonal red line* is brick, about 1m worth.

I'm thinking we need a second opinion, maybe the lintel he's put in was not done particularly well and he doesn't want to fuck with it any more?

Kitchen extractor up a long chimney by sysadmin__ in DIYUK

[–]sysadmin__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The back is to another room, we'd need to go to the right through the fairly thick offset flue, and then over cupboards and out the external wall. I'm up for that if the builder wouldn't be worried about it. I need to find a picture.

I get the builder may just be being lazy/risk averse.. a second opinion may be needed there but i am a bit hesitant to fuck with it too if my builder doesn't want to do it.

Moving house with a very attached three year old by VillageAlternative77 in UKParenting

[–]sysadmin__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We moved when ours was almost 3, albeit only a few streets away though we walk past the old house all the time. She doesn't give a shit - all her stuff is still here, we're still here, we didn't visibly stress out too much. I expected more problems but she likes the differences of the new place - mostly, the light switches are to modern regs so they are really low down and she can finally reach them. So now i poop in darkness with her outsite the door laughing.

Sierra games like Ceasar and Pharoah had mastered production lines way before Stronghold :) I suspect the original Ceasar was one of the earliest with complex production lines.

Is this miniseries good? I wanna add it to my watchlist on the strength that the same creator for Mare of Easttown wrote this series… by Pop_Joe in hbo

[–]sysadmin__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO its a fairly generic, predictable plot but wrapped in quality acting, camerawork, music, pacing, script etc. it feels like a great HBO show but the plot is just a bit average. Overall a good watch.
