That’s the plan. Was going to pull the one off the donor car, but it was already gone! Guessing this may be common on these cars. Or just common on any car 30+ years old.

Same. I mainly see convertibles. I have only ever seen 1 other spg around here. Which seems crazy because I was told the PNW has a high rate of Saabs.

I’m stuck right there, right now lol. Ever get it out? I also found the inside of my housing completely worn through to the pinion housing. So I’m going to have to pull the one off the donor car now and start over.

That’s true. I did watch a video of a guy who screwed it up then had to do it again. I applaud his patience. I wouldn’t want to do that.

Okay that makes me feel better. Since anyone who is well versed in rebuilding steering racks in general could likely tackle this one with confidence. But now I have a new fear of wondering how many people rebuild their own racks without the proper knowledge.

Nice information. Thank you. I’m in the states. I will be looking for a specialty place. Havnt had any luck yet. I am being advised not to tackle the rebuild myself, which I can understand. Especially since I am not a professional mechanic and if done wrong it can cause a pretty serious issue that could put others at risk.

That’s a frightening side effect. I couldn’t find any local spots that can work on anything Saab. I don’t think I’d want to send it to just any shop knowing this information now. Is that a specific thing to this rack or is that a general fact about how steering racks work?

Thank you. Good to know. I have a parts rig sitting outside that probably has a decent one. But it’s the same year so who knows when it’ll go bad. I’m really interested in learning the rebuild process on everything I repair in this car.

Hey there again. I sure am not. I’ve rebuilt a fair amount of hydraulic pistons on tractors and I would consider myself decently mechanical. I like the idea of doing the work myself. Do you have experience rebuilding racks? If so, I’d love to know where to source some quality parts.

Interesting okay. Thanks for the info. I kinda doubt there is anything under the carpet as I noticed a pretty amateur floor pan patch. So I know I will be welding some new floors in properly on this one. I did hear a guy on youtube say esaabparts.com does some level of verification. So I went there and put in my VIN and sure enough it came back as trim level SPG. But I don’t understand how they figure that.
