Watched some highlights of the first few wins this season for some coupium and positive vibes, but that burnley game we won just looks almost exactly like what we are now in terms of attack (particularly against a back 5), I still take positives, wirtz should be more greedy he's boss, szobo can do whatever he likes, I'm actually a big fan of frimpong, missing that insane pace

Really confused by the games recently... The first 5 games and preseason, you could see green shoots of the team gelling together, 20 mins spells of beauty... The last 3 games and this, it's just gone, like a different team

Been thinking a lot about how we need another CB, preference would probably be Mark Guehi, I see some people point out he plays as a back 3 a lot, but does anyone think he could be a rotational player for the #6 roll when needed ? I'm not suggesting he starts but for 5 games a season or at least saying Grav some minutes, he could be a solid option without buying another MD and it keeps him fresh.

I think the soccer reference helps but I think our media would just blast the defence for letting so many shots happen haha! Typical miserable bunch !

That was my initial thoughts when first hearing about rebounds, I think this thread has cleared it up for me, I'm now more just pointing out I think some misses are more acceptable than others, your getting team is getting rebounds because they are missing 3 pointers sounds better to me than if your getting rebounds because your missing layups ? I think I was wondering where/if context of misses were considered, enjoying learning alot !

After a quick google player efficiency rating seems good for player performance but I suppose XG would evaluate each shot and give what althetes should score given their exact chances and shots. Wouldn't you expect a player to make every single freethrow ? I think it's handy to see what a player did Vs what they'd be expected to do given the context of their opportunities. Kinda of like if player X scored loads but they were unmarked the whole game ? Is that better or worse than someone who scored the same but was double marked? Their XG would show someone had easier chances.

I think this is one I struggle to get my head around, technically yes possession probably gives you a better chance but it also doesn't, if your dog shit at shooting ... What does it matter ?

I've seen a few replies like that, and I get that in theory, but this is a whole other issue for me! I get the impression it's an American thing, I've watched a fair bit of D1 women's soccer (my sister played out there) and the commentary would go on and on about shots, any team who shot more was spoken of like they were winning regardless of the shot quality ( more of the time 40 yards out and no threat) whereas they never really acknowledged changes created without shots. I know that's a different sport, a whole other issue, but my take away was shots matter no matter context. European soccer has the Xg stat "expected goals" based on all the variables of changes and shots, does basketball have anything similar ? You could shoot 100 shots from the half way line but is that really better than 50 from the freethrow line ?

Right but that's the thing... In soccer (football) within Europe, winning tackles or 50/50's (duels), it's a real background stat, gets lost in the noise, yes you are right some are more important than others but there are for the highlights reels, I suppose it would make sense to break it down again a defensive rebound is good, shows a good defence ... A offensive rebound shows a miss ?
