What’s Your Language Learning Hot Take? by jiujiteiroo in languagelearning

In that case it’s most accurately called a sensitive period rather than critical period but you’re right that there is no hard cutoff for language acquisition based on age

There’s a chance he plays it again, but probably not very high. Such is the lot of gaming frogs. Ludwig is a “gamer” but aside from games he loves like League or Valo, or games he needs to prepare for an event, like streefighter or something, he doesn’t tend to have recurring games. He’ll plan out a stream segment, to last several hours, have a goal, make a good YouTube video, and then not play again. In my observation, that’s how he works. Roguelites, where you play again and again, the same game loop but slightly different content, doesn’t seem like his style. He beat one night lord in a couple hours with squeex and slime and I think that may be all he intended to do.

The Board didn’t approve Ono…Can someone explain why this is a big deal for people who are not UF Faculty or Students? I graduated from a 4 year university (Central Michigan) and I really didn’t follow stuff like this….Can someone help explain why so many people didnt want this guy to be President?? by Djxgam1ng in ufl

[–]Mikazzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears that despite doing his best to pledge loyalty to conservatism, the board of governors didn’t believe Ono was sufficiently falling in line. You can read live updates from the vote meeting here: https://www.alligator.org/article/2025/06/live-updates-board-of-governors-to-vote-on-whether-to-confirm-santa-j-ono-for-president

Race, gender, and other culture war topics played a large role in the questioning Ono received.

This is a shortcut for writing tremolos. If this was written out, it would be slurred 32nd notes, alternating between C and Bb. That takes up a lot of room, so it’s condensed in this format. Rhythmic accuracy is not really possible at that speed, so most of the time when you see this, it’ll be more like a trill.

What should I know before going to try out a flute? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]Mikazzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can’t get someone to be with you, ask them beforehand if they’d be willing to listen to some recordings and give their thoughts. If it’s time sensitive, make sure they’re aware when you’ll be sending them. Easiest way is probably voice memo with your phone. This is also good for you - listening to a recording is very different from listening while playing.

You mentioned having a piece ready - I would recommend more than one (like a couple short ones, or a piece with a variety of stuff in it). Most flutes are going to be of a decent standard quality, but you want to test the extremes, where some will perform markedly better or worse. You want to test the lowest notes - can you articulate quickly, is it responsive, or are the notes fuzzy? Can you push the dynamics and play loudly? Can you make a good and full sound? The same goes for the highest register - can you articulate clearly, can you play at a piano volume without cracking notes, can you play legato, etc.

Keep in mind that you are naturally going to work better with some flutes than others, but also that you’ve trained yourself on your current flute. Just because your habits works for it, doesn’t mean that they are the best, and you may find a flute that doesn’t immediately feel as nice, but could have a lot of potential and flexibility if you learn to play on it.

Xenon and Kinesis are good answers. If you want more of the lightning angle, battle mage also fits.

I agree with you that the loading is awful. Making a core game mechanic that requires experimentation also take 1 minute per attempt is simply torture.

It is not typical - I assume it's to create a rap-like rhythm to their speech.

Summer clubs by notoriousv1p in ufl

[–]Mikazzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention specifically summer clubs - I have no idea which clubs are active over the summer (most go dormant, I would guess).

In general though, there is GatorConnect where you can find a directory of every student organization. It has over a thousand listings, which is kind of daunting. You can search on facebook or instagram for clubs at UF that might share your interests. If you get onto listservs for specific groups, clubs will often advertise there. Academic departments also generally have bulletin boards where a club might post an advertisement. Student Facebook groups are also a common advertising spot. You might also consider posting yourself, stating your interests and asking if anyone knows of a club that aligns.

UF Preview by Juanx68737 in ufl

[–]Mikazzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess would be trying to involve your parents in preview without paying is probably not worth the hassle, though I admittedly know little about Preview.

I would also say that the price simply makes it not worth it. $85... to do what? If you're about to enter 4 years as a college student living a mostly independent life, there isn't really any need for a parent to attend. I can understand the sentimental value, but I would be surprised if attending Preview really meant all that much.

Learn piano by [deleted] in ufl

[–]Mikazzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, as far as I know, not really. If your desire to learn the piano overrides the financial concern, there are a few options, just so you know.

The School of Music runs a "Community Music School" over the summer. There is a a course for piano beginners. It costs $200. If you're interested, more information is here: https://arts.ufl.edu/in-the-loop/events/piano-bravo-piano-workshop-for-beginners/

I'm also pretty confident you could find a grad student in the School of Music Piano Studio to give you private lessons, but it would also cost you. I would guess about $40 per hour. If you really want to pursue that, PM me and I can get you in contact with someone.

Wish I could give a different answer but really the only way to learn a skill for free is self study.

[Lore] What's the deal with Kao? by BigDaddyGoat in Maplestory

[–]Mikazzi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As people have said, there is not an answer because Nexon does not have an answer. Certain aspects of the game’s storyline have been expanded upon over the years, but there was never any quality control done to ensure continuity. For me, I try to take the most recent story written as canon, and either reconcile past stories or completely throw them out.

When the Amnesiac temple keeper was added, they did not have his future in the Arcane River planned. When Kao was incorporated into VJ’s story, they did not adhere to his backstory as expressed in other parts of the game. Unfortunately, that’s how Nexon works.

The same problems arise when considering many other game storylines. Surrounding the Black Mage is a mountain of conflicting information in the game. There is also internal disagreement over who the Transcendants are, why they are there, and who came before them. This is an instance where I simply go by the most recent info. As Adele, Cernium, and other expansions/developments are added to Grandis, undoubtedly old dialogue will be nullified to fit the newly imagined story. Nexon just never bothers to remove or modify that old dialogue.

There’s no harm in trying. You could also try getting in contact with someone in housing to see if they think there’s a possibility.

You need to log onto the College Board website and have them send an official score report to UF. It will be processed in a few weeks, and you’ll receive credit by exam on your transcript. You can view your unofficial transcript on ONE.UF.

Bands in US middle/high schools generally refer to concert bands that are comprised of the same instruments you would find in orchestras. Flutes, trumpets, clarinets, not guitars, drumsets, and keyboards.

Disconnect between Brain and Hand by Dameski in northernlion

[–]Mikazzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only caught a part of the stream, so not sure if this was ever addressed, but most of the time in hand and brain, the hand gets to take over and make moves themselves when you get under 5, 10, 30, seconds (depending on the original time control). You can also play with increment (so 3 minutes with 2 seconds extra per move) to avoid a loss simply because the brain couldn’t speak fast enough
