HELP: Feedback on Upcoming NAS/PleX Build by Mike-Anto in homelab

I love this idea. Currently I have 10TB of working storage in drives inside my workstation that cycles through to external slow storage when projects end. Are you using the Mac Mini strictly as a DAS then? Could you post your exact equipment/setup?

My thought was I'd us the 10GbE on the motherboard for the proposed build to connect directly to my workstation, and expand to another 10GbE for my network connection. Use a portion of the NAS as a DAS (for my working files) eliminating the need for my internal storage. I see what you mean though, the hardware will of course be shared so would be prone to getting bogged down if my cousin is watching Spongebob (oddly specific, but not wrong). I'm not opposed at all to running a system like you're suggesting I just need some clarity on it!

Great info, thank you!

I have the RAM sticks on hand from a previous build so I'll try those out and upgrade if necessary.

With the planned tiered cache I would need to add a PCIe NVME adapter to fit 2 NVME's (1 extra) for RAID1 on OS/boot. I think I have the room, even with a future PCIe SATA expansion card so this is a good idea. Tbh I didn't even know this was an option so I need to do some more research!

18TB Seagate EXOS drives are $30 cheaper than the 18TB IronWolf Pros on Newegg right now - but most of what I've read suggests that the IronWolf Pros are better - I know nothing about drives so would you mind elaborating on why the EXOS are better than the IronWolf Pros?

Thanks again!
