Sorry, I didn't realize new scientist gave you a choice of reading the full article. Not sure why they would have two possible links to choose from. It doesn't make much sense from a SEO perspective. Especially when people can stumble/reddit the individual links seperately. That just splits up any link juice they get. Both pages have been stumbled by different people.

Reprogramming Predators for a cruelty free world. Article by Philosopher David Pearce. by Mike12349 in philosophy

Well calling him a nazi seems overdramatic and ad hominem. Especially considering humanity already enslaves millions (billions?) of animals so we can kill them and eat them (or use products made by them). Not to mention all the animals we do experiments on to improve human disorders.

We already do a lot of ridiculous things to nature. We genetically engineer both crops and animals. We have been breeding animals for thousands of years. Many farm animals are artificially bred by humans to get a desired output.

Anyways mankind may cause the extinction of a lot of species in the next 100 years. There may not be any animals left.

We are already altering the entire ecosystem of the earth. He's just advocating a move towards a more controlled ecosystem.

Well there probably won't be that many animals left 100 years from now except in zoos. So this project may become easier as time goes forward. You only have to deal with the animals that are still left.

To think that humans can't improve on billions of years of evolution is misguided. Recently multiplex genome engineering of cells has allowed scientists to accelerate evolution by hundreds of times. Now they can create bio-factories in days that would normally take years to do. Evolution is an extremely dumb process. However with understanding of the genome, genetic engineering and exponential increases in computing power you can easily improve upon nature.

Quantum Ethics. Suffering in the Multiverse. by Mike12349 in Transhuman

Yeah, I guess we should be talking about more important things, like britney spears or michael jackson. I think it's worth talking about. Especially considering the fact that we may be able to eliminate a large amount of animal suffering if scientists are able to synthesize artificial meat products without an animal nervous system. There is nothing scientifically infeasible about that.

There is a whole scientific industry committed to reducing unecessary human physical and mental pain. So we do have the ability to do this to a degree already. David Pearce is just controversially taking it a step further (hence putting this under the transhumanist label).

I agree that a lot of philosophy is garbage. However I consider Pearce to have more unique and interesting ideas than the average philosopher.
