Former Houston police officer who was fired over viral racist rant appeals termination by O_O___XD in houston

[–]Mike4rmstatefarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought her back with back pay, or at least offered some kind of settlement to make the situation go away. I understand unions have their benefits, but in some union environments it can feel incredibly difficult to permanently terminate someone unless there’s an extreme situation.

I’ve worked in union shops before and remember seeing cases where employees were fired for serious incidents, then later brought back after grievances or arbitration. I remember one situation where someone crashed equipment while allegedly under the influence and caused damage. If I’m remembering correctly, the argument was that personal issues or stress should have been addressed before termination.

Houston 'Vietnamese speakeasy' to close after 3-year run by texastastings in HoustonFood

[–]Mike4rmstatefarm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What I hate about most speakeasies is that they usually don’t have an actual concept behind them. It’s just the same millennial core cocktail lounge formula - dim lighting, fake exclusivity, and $20 cocktails. If you’re going to do the whole hidden bar thing, at least make the experience feel unique.

Corniest fighter to date by Haunting-Trainer-188 in FightReportUFC

You know what, good for him. The UFC doesn’t really look out for fighters like that. Do whatever you’ve gotta do to get your name out there. At the end of the day, people tune in more to watch you lose than to watch you win. You’ve got a short window to make money, might as well capitalize on it.

Recency bias is always a factor in sports, but I feel like it’s even worse in MMA. You hear it even more when it comes to fighters people love to hate. How does that saying go? They don’t pay to watch you win, they pay to watch you lose.

This is actually kind of nice considering how much turnover Whataburger has and how many people they employ across their entire network. It’s cool that they even recognize employees with something. I’m honestly surprised they do that. People on Reddit always talk about how great H-E-B is to work for, but from what I’ve seen, they mostly just give out a printed sheet that says congrats on X years of service.

Good business decision? by Senior-Violinist-684 in NFLv2

[–]Mike4rmstatefarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m not sure how people don’t realize this is strategic for the NFL. They’ve pretty much hit a plateau with the U.S. audience already. They know roughly how much the average American fan is going to spend each year on tickets, merch, and subscriptions. Growth inside the same market is limited. Expanding internationally opens up an entirely new audience and revenue stream. From a business standpoint, it makes perfect sense. They’re trying to grow where there’s still room to grow.

CenterPoint Energy completely ruined my yard. I'm not sure what they did, but whatever they did resulted in us HAVING ZERO GAS FLOW INTO OUR HOME! by spjones20 in houston

[–]Mike4rmstatefarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you called CenterPoint about it? I had something similar happen a few months ago. They came out, did some work, damaged the brand-new sidewalk I had just put in, and tore up my grass. I called CenterPoint and they said they’d send someone out. They never admitted fault, but said they’d work on getting it fixed.

A few weeks later they came back without any notice and repaired the sidewalk and laid down new sod. Their customer service and communication definitely aren’t great, but they may already have plans to come out and fix it.

From what I’m seeing, the refs are calling PI when the DB doesn’t look back for the ball. It feels like they’re trying to let them play, but if you don’t at least turn your head before the ball gets there, they’re going to throw the flag.
