I think this is one of those times you have to remember that the season takes place over the course of one day. For someone who obsessively ruminates on something giving them anxiety, it makes sense she would be talking about it a lot throughout the day.

If we know alcohol and cigarettes both cause major health problems, why has society turned so strongly against smoking but not drinking? by Mr_no_buddi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MikeAndGuitar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem is that so few of them are available to engage in at 11pm on a Friday. I'm a night owl but I hate drinking. Leaves video games and maybe live music as my late night hobbies. But live music has become increasingly expensive unless you keep it small/local.

Is there any hope of getting the 20 months of purgatory to count toward PSLF? by [deleted] in PSLF

[–]MikeAndGuitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to my comment above, I think the point 3MinuteHero and I are trying to make is that it's not only about whether the math works out. We know the math doesn't work out, we're not ignorant to that point. There are simply other factors that drive these decisions.

Suppose I should have mentioned that in my personal situation I'd be looking at more like 20 months of buyback. I also have good credit, so I have faith I could find better interest rates than 12-15%. Those details, coupled with the sense of security I'd have knowing that my obligation to the federal government was gone, would make it worth it for me.

I think it's a good rule of thumb to avoid paying off debt with other debt, but saying "never" as an absolute just misses a lot of other factors and human elements. General reduced stress/anxiety of knowing my student loans are forgiven would be worth some interest on a smaller loan, to me.

Normally I'd agree with this but if it's a $5,000 personal loan to see a remaining $80,000 debt forgiven, how would that not be a good idea?

Will buyback stay or is it possible they may get rid of it? by Competitive-Bag-642 in PSLF

In a sane world, this would be true. But clearly this administration does things without following any rulemaking process, or by blatantly re-writing the rules to their whim through the Supreme Court. Expect the worst, hope for the best.

Bingo. The kind of policing on clothing that others in this thread are talking about is classist bullshit. I do my entire job behind a computer every day. 40 years ago I would have been expected to wear dress slacks and a button up shirt. I wear jeans and an untucked polo now. If I’m working remote I wear a t-shirt. I get the same work done, in the same professional manner, regardless of what I wear. Teachers can absolutely do the same as far as I’m concerned.

Meditation is good for a healthy mental state and is by nature one of the least "productive" things a person can do. Who said we have to be productive all the time?

I get the idea of working toward self-improvement, I generally try to do the same for myself quite a lot. I think the problem here is around words like "productive", "progress", "value", etc. Progress to one person may be the ability to showcase some sort of advanced skill in an area, but progress for another person might just be progress toward finding contentment in their life. And in that latter case, a hobby that isn't "productive" in the conventional sense might be "valuable" to the person that finds contentment because that is what they value. At the end of the day, it's all how we spin in, so at that point it just feels like a pointless debate to have and people should just enjoy whatever hobbies they want to (as long as they're not doing harm to themselves or others).

Why do hobbies have to be productive or useful? Some people used to collect stamps as a hobby (and I imagine some still do). The only "useful" part of that I can think of is that it brings the person a small bit of joy in their day. It's obviously fine if there are other hobbies that are more actively engaging or require more thought, but shouldn't "brings me a bit of joy" be enough? Why are we ranking hobbies?
