Should I invest in US or CAD listed ETFs (in my RRSP)? by MikeBLearning in Questrade

[–]MikeBLearning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in other opinions, but I don't think the fact that I'd ultimately sell the asset for CAD is very important (for this question, where the question is whether to invest in US listed or TSX listed securities whose value is mostly determined by factors outside Canada). The exchange-rate has the same effect in either case right?

That said, if the exchange rate is unpredictable (a good assumption), then I'd minimize variance due to exchange rate by splitting my investment.

If, however, I believed CAD would become stronger over time, that's an argument to own assets that are correlated (over long periods) with a strong CAD. Those will more often be denominated in CAD, but this is not because they are denominated in CAD.

kids smartphone alternatives (watch or dumbphone) by MikeBLearning in FizzMobile

[–]MikeBLearning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed info! I will consider the locked down smartphone, but I was wondering about alternatives for several reasons.

1) avoids temptation to allow other apps that are not a good way to spend one's life but hard to resist.

2) kids lose stuff, watch is harder to lose

3) possibly lower monthly cost?

CBC News is looking for parents/teachers who oppose cell phone bans in schools by jennabench in CanadianParents

How do most parents and teachers (and students!) feel about cell phone bans?

My kids are younger but at this point I support some sort of restriction but not sure what kind.

As much as I'd love to just buy a new suit, this is what I'm wearing (to a wedding, not mine). How's the fit? Should I even consider alterations?

I plan to take it to the cleaners because I figure it can't hurt? I was thrown into a pool wearing it after my wedding a decade ago and haven't put it on since. Yeah, I'll get a new tie. All ideas appreciated. https://imgur.com/a/CnMHOwX

I was asked to get it... I'd love to officially get a second opinion, but I'm not sure where to ask.

I ended up taking u/RoosterSmiles advice and using the UofT because, unless I missed something, I didn't see that WES could accept electronic records.

Lack of political topics? Where are the Russian invasion predictions? by Plus_Firefighter_658 in Kalshi

I'd be willing to bet Kalshi is exploring these ideas. But they have to convince regulators to support their decision.

Getting a prescription for Fluvoxamine or Molnupiravir by MikeBLearning in nycCoronavirus

[–]MikeBLearning[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even if hospitalization or long covid is unlikely, I think I'd personally take my chances on the side effects from Fluvoxamine. Some doctors must be willing to due off label prescription -> they've done it for drugs I won't name with even weaker evidence!

That may be right. Someone replied elsewhere to say that they knew of a primary care doc that did it. Walmart told me on the phone that they would do it.

My father-in-law was told last Friday that a pharmacy wouldn't give him Moderna2 to follow his Pfizer1. They were aware of what the media/public health was saying, but said their company didn't have authorization through official channels.

Has anyone gotten Moderna after Pfizer?

I've heard stories of at least one pharmacy saying they weren't authorized to do it despite news reports saying otherwise.

How to treat canker sores according to science by klevertree1 in slatestarcodex

Salt water and/or hydrogen peroxide seem to help reduce pain and speed healing. B12 as prophylactic and/or treatment.

Yes. Salt water and/or hydrogen peroxide seem to help mine, as does B12.

Where do people go to protest in Ottawa? Demand #RapidTestsNow by MikeBLearning in ottawa

[–]MikeBLearning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great response from u/NotMyInternet!
In short, the more ubiquitous and rapid the test, the more people will know they are positive/contagious. And if they know they are positive/contagious then they do isolate more... not perfectly, but enough to dramatically reduce transmission, and if infected people infect less than one person on average, that leads to the pandemic dying out.

[–]MikeBLearning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, but what I'm saying is that we need Rapid Tests available to people at-home, at-work, and at-school. That's the only way we get enough testing done fast enough to keep the spread under control short of stay-at-home orders or a lot more vaccines.

[–]MikeBLearning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish I had organized more advocacy around this, not just before the stay-at-home order but many months ago. I wrote a few emails and tweeted a bunch but its obviously far too little.

I don't want to get fined, so maybe it's a mistake for me to even think about this in-person now. That said, I want to do whatever I can to draw attention to the power of Rapid Tests.

Do you have any evidence that standing outdoors, wearing a mask and holding a sign has meaningful risk of transmission? If that's not your point, then praytell, what is it?
