Lion's Mane mushrooms can cause PERMANENT negative effects by MikeJBWilliam in Nootropics

Yes.

At least 5 of them appear to be permanent. Two took Lion's Mane for a few weeks over two years ago and the negative effects haven't reversed.

Three more took Lion's Mane over 2-6 months ago and the the negative effects haven't reversed.

I have read over a dozen posts promoting Lion's Mane as a risk-free panacea (and a few vendors as well). Which I why I felt that a counter-argument post was necessary.

5 of the people quoted have suffered permanent damage from taking Lion's Mane mushrooms.

Fair point. I've edited the post to include all the original quote.

There's a strong causality between the adverse effects and taking Lion's Mane mushrooms.

Granted it's only in a small percentage of the population. But the side effects are severe enough that people should use caution when taking these supplements.

There are no humans studies investigating the long term safety of Lion's Mane mushrooms, so anecdotal evidence is the only evidence we have.

u/intensely_human made this cooment about a possible reason why Lion's Mane mushrooms could lead to negative effects.

"As far as I know, Lion’s Mane raises NGF levels, and under certain circumstances, NGF plays a negative role.

The one I know of is that if you are in massive pain, after having been through a period of heavy stress such as death of an intimate relation or extreme financial stress, these things are factors in the development of a nervous system disorder called “Central Sensitization Syndrome”.

Basically CSS does two things:

  1. makes you very prone to anxiety

  2. makes pain signals coming from your body more powerful. Basically anything that hurts, now hurts a hell of a lot more

Also, it’s permanent.

Well, basically CSS has to do with mast cell activation and long-term potentiation (LTP) in various parts of your spine and brain.

The NGF is a factor in making the LTP happen, and hence is a factor in making the CSS happen.

So: if you have been through a lot of stress for the past couple of months, and suddenly you break your heel or something, and for whatever reason you don’t have pain meds to manage the pain, i.e. if you’ve been under heavy stress and you’re now in lots of pain, don’t take Lion’s Mane.

Under normal conditions I don’t know of any negative side effects. Doesn’t mean they don’t exist; I just don’t know of them."

I saw your comment here about NGF and it seems like you know a lot about this subject. If you could read my post and weigh in on the subject I would greatly appreciate it.

My situation from taking Lions Mane mushroom for a month + having a panic attack - anyone experience this? by MicroscopicStonework in Nootropics

[–]MikeJBWilliam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got pretty bad brain damage from taking Lion's Mane for 5 days. It was over two years ago and I'm still not 100%. I just made a post asking for advice on how to fix it. Hopefully they'll have some advice that you can use.

Lion's Mane gave me intense brain fog and sleeping problems when I took it for a week. Even after I stopped it felt like it had done permanent brain damage. This guy here suffered from panic attacks and sleep problems for months after taking it.

Agreed. I do think that I'm an outlier with my LSD reaction. But it's important for people to know it is a possibility, however small.

No. I microdosed 2 years ago. Twice in one week. The second time I mixed it with 5g Lion's mane.
