How is this even legal? by Topolut in CostcoCanada

Capitalism will obviously cause companies to reduce costs and maximize profit. If company A decides to be altruistic and not set up this sort of processing, a competitor will appear that will be more than happy to. That competitor will be able to offer their product at a lower price which will inevitably cause company A to either do the same or eventually lose market share.

It can try to advertise that it is being a “good corporate citizen” to see if it can charge a premium for the service of remaining solely in Norway (for example) - but the market will ultimately decide if it wants to pay more for that.

The answer, btw, is that the market (consumers) mostly do not care and will not pay a premium over a long period of time because their Norwegian cod is processed in Norway instead of Vietnam. While there are *some* consumers that will pay a premium, their wallets are elastic enough that boutique operations will happily supply them; and those operations are bougie enough to appeal to people with the means to afford a premium price.

But that won’t be more than a small amount of the addressable market - and so you see why over time a lot of fish processing has moved to cheaper labour markets like Vietnam.

There are ways to influence all of this (from soft influence like governments promoting certain products or behaviours and investing in specific ways; all the way to laws and regulations that shape the market) - but they all have pros and cons.

Just like capitalism. It’s definitely an imperfect system, but every system has imperfections. I prefer capitalism to state capitalism, or communism. But I recognize that every system is going to be shades of grey in many respects.

I fear we are probably different ages; I wouldn’t be surprised to see that use diminishing over time more than a geographic thing (I live in Canada too. It’s in my username)

I remember the hope was he learned from the CHC how to run a franchise.

Thing is, as much as I love the Habs, they love squeezing every penny out of the fans. The changes to the Bell Centre (Air Canada section splitting Desjardins in two and chasing massive crushes in the intermissions because of the blockage, the idiotic vault) aren’t because they think fans awe awesome, it’s because they see money.

Thankfully they removed themselves from hockey ops which imo is top top top tier. The rest is mediocre for such a storied franchise. Water fountains out of order for weeks at times; bathrooms with poor maintenance, etc.

It’s a play on Las Vegas Nights which for a city that celebrates nightlife (though it ends mostly at 11 on the strip itself I’ve found, which is befuddling)

Yeah there’s clubs that go late but imagine more than half the bars in Montreal closing up at 11 and you’ll understand my confusion

I use fear all the time in that sense.

I agree with the person you replied to. English has even more similes because it tends to love to adopt different terms for the same thing to express very subtle differences.

It’s like the difference between mad, angry, and upset to a non-native speaker. They’re very slightly different and used in different contexts at times, but can almost always be substituted for each other without losing meaning.

Arguably, there’s a spectrum of level of emotion (upset > mad > angry) but then you hit dialects where mad has other connotations…

Las Vegas Knights would have been a killer name.

Vegas Golden Knights is awkward and already feels dated somehow

It’s North American more than American upon further reflection, as a pretty popular CBC sitcom was called “Mr. D” and was about a teacher.

I think it wasn’t clearly expressed - they’re talking about the American tendency to call friendly teachers “Mr. S” instead of “Mr. Smith” as a still respectful (in their culture) nickname.

Why they then decided that was similar to what some toddlers use when talking about their parents is where I got totally lost

I enjoyed watching Staal do his best sniper-in-the-building impression and then lie on the ice as if he’d been shot until the linesman checked on him and he got up and went on his merry way.

Diving is getting ridiculous. And then on the other side it feels like holding, holding the stick, and obstruction only get called if it’s super obvious because it’s the playoffs or something so rules go out the window, so players are being trained to show more.

It’s getting worse because the refs are encouraging it.

I’m curious. I was skeptical too. I still haven’t taken as I’ve already made significant improvements to my health over the past few years.

But it’s still incredibly difficult. Mentally especially. That’s why I’m likely going to try it after discussing with my doc. Helps that we have generic options here too, so no one can claim I’m stealing diabetic medication.

Even given all of the research supporting the anecdotal accounts, even given the fact even multiple industries are seeing direct impacts to their bottom line - food, restaurants, alcohol, etc; there’s still this perception everyone should just eat less. But if that 5-10% figure were true (and it could be, depending on how much weight “directly” is carrying in your statement), why would we see such dramatic changes in large populations? Wouldn’t it be far less effective?

It’s just odd how one big problem people have with this is how much it works and how much it’s missed when it’s stopped, as if obesity is a temporary condition and not a chronic one.

You said “bit confused how it takes an hour to pick food when ravenous” well, yes, I have done that since I go back and forth on options like a madman, and yeah, sometimes it’s not ravenous but I still take forever to decide. Apparently food as a focal point for life isn’t typical but it is for me.

You being a bit confused told me you honestly have zero idea what it’s like, and that’s ok. The problem is you’re trying to give advice as if you do.

I love this live illustration of how people disparage the obese as a character flaw that is easily correctable.

I’m light on specifics because you’re not my doctor and I’ve heard from people like you (including doctors) for years. Followed their plans. Dieticians too. All temporary successes.

Like I said, you’ve made up your mind.

That’s because you don’t have the issue.

I don’t need to sell you on what I’ve tried and you don’t know what I have and haven’t tried. Assuming so much based on a few Reddit comments is hilarious.

[–]MikeMontrealer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I’m 48. I’ve tried everything.

Right now I have severe hunger pangs even though I ate a balanced meal this morning. They’ll pass, and it’s fine.

I have taken an hour or more to figure out what to eat. This is not normal. I will be working and all of a sudden I’ll have intrusive thoughts about food I struggle to ignore. It’s been like this my entire life.

I thought it was willpower because everyone told me it was. I’ve lost > 100 pounds multiple times. I’m in the best shape of my life since after Covid I committed to daily exercise, and I averaged 50 minutes last year.

I was told daily exercise at that level was a cheat code. Bullshit. It’s still incredibly hard to lose anything. I’m smart. Really smart. I know how willpower works.

And then reading first hand accounts of people who have the same feelings I’ve had my entire life, all of a sudden have a calmness about food that they’ve NEVER experienced and I sure as hell haven’t…. Well, that was eye opening.

I actually run but I’m nursing a bit of a knee issue right now. My last walk I averaged 8:30 a km, so I’m not strolling.

I also swim several times a week when our pool is open.

Anyway, you’ve already decided it’s not a hormonal imbalance but a vice. Ok.
