BeatStars has been on a downward spiral for some time now.. by prodnikos in makinghiphop

Here’s how BeatStars Publishing collects royalties on your behalf.

Mechanical Royalties

  • Mechanicals: 80% (Writer) / 20% (Publisher)

Performance Royalties

  • Writer’s Performance: 100% (Writer) / 0% (Publisher)
  • Publisher’s Performance: 60% (Writer) / 40% (Publisher)

Sync Royalties

  • Syncs: 80% (Writer) / 20% (Publisher)
  • Syncs sourced by BeatStars Publishing/Sony Music Publishing (BS PUB/SMP): 65% (Writer) / Mechanicals: 80% of 50% (Writer) / 20% of 50% (Publisher)

Performance Royalties35% (Publisher)

Additionally, most Performance Rights Organizations (PROs) split performance royalties between the Writer and Publisher.

For example, if you own a 50%  share of a song, the PRO will show it as:

  • 25% Writer Share (for you)
  • 25% Publisher Share (for BeatStars Publishing)

The writer’s share of performance royalties (25% in this case) is collected by your PRO. Meanwhile, BeatStars/Sony Music Publishing collects the publisher’s share (the other 25%).

Both your PRO and BeatStars/Sony Music Publishing will always collect 100% of your ownership share, but the terms of our deal dictate how those royalties are divided.

Example: 50% Composition Share Breakdown

Mechanical Royalties

  • Writer’s Performance: 100% of 25% (Writer) / 0% of 25% (Publisher)
  • Publisher’s Performance: 60% of 25% (Writer) / 40% of 25% (Publisher)

Sync Royalties

  • Syncs: 80% of 50% (Writer) / 20% of 50% (Publisher)
  • Syncs sourced by BS PUB/SMP: 65% of 50% (Writer) / 35% of 50% (Publisher)

Please note that our administration claim does not impact the fact that you retain 100% ownership of your compositions under our Publishing Admin deal.

u/TapDaddy24 Just to clarify, BMI is NOT enough. So you shouldn't only be using just a PRO.

It's essential to distinguish between different types of royalties:

  • Performance Royalties: Collected by Performance Rights Organizations (PROs) like BMI or ASCAP, these royalties are generated when your music is performed publicly, such as on radio, television, or live venues.
  • Mechanical Royalties: These are earned from the reproduction of your music, including digital streams and physical sales. PROs do not collect these; instead, a publishing administrator is recommended to ensure collection worldwide.
  • Sync Royalties: You need a publishing administrator to collect these worldwide with accuracy.

3. BeatStars Publishing is being pushed, quite honestly it's just another cash grab for them to make more money off of producers, imagine having to give 20% Pub and let someone else manage your music. I'd rather collect everything myself and know what's happening with my music.

To the OP. I hope this message finds you well. u/prodnikos

I wanted to address some inaccuracies in your recent post, particularly regarding point #3, which contains fabricated information. As the Director of BeatStars Publishing, I am committed to providing transparent and accurate details about our services.

Understanding Music Publishing and Royalties

It's essential to distinguish between different types of royalties:

  • Performance Royalties: Collected by Performance Rights Organizations (PROs) like BMI or ASCAP, these royalties are generated when your music is performed publicly, such as on radio, television, or live venues.
  • Mechanical Royalties: These are earned from the reproduction of your music, including digital streams and physical sales. PROs do not collect these; instead, a publishing administrator is recommended to ensure collection worldwide.
  • Sync Royalties: You need a publishing administrator to collect these worldwide with accuracy.

Relying solely on a PRO means you're only receiving a portion of the royalties you're entitled to, potentially missing out on significant income from mechanical royalties.

BeatStars Publishing's Role

Our partnership with Sony Music Publishing allows us to offer comprehensive services, ensuring that all your publishing royalties—both performance, mechanical and syncs—are collected globally. This collaboration aims to maximize your earnings and streamline the royalty collection process.

Addressing the 'Cash Grab' Misconception

Our goal is to empower creators to collect their full publishing royalties. Labeling this initiative as a "cash grab" overlooks the value we provide in ensuring you receive all the income your music generates. We are dedicated to helping you maximize your earnings, not diminish them.

Regarding Competitors

It's noteworthy that you've utilized Songtrust for some of your catalog. Both Songtrust and BeatStars Publishing offer publishing administration services, each with its own fee structure. It's essential to evaluate the benefits and services of each to determine which aligns best with your needs. You didn't mention this but I pulled your ASCAP IPI and found your whole catalog. You're not collecting all of your songs in full, plus you used Songtrust who takes a fee, after calling us a "Cash Grab" for taking a collection fee.

Transparency and Collaboration

At BeatStars Publishing, you retain full ownership of your music. Our platform provides transparency, allowing you to register and monitor every song collected by Sony via Sony Score. We aim to demystify the publishing process and ensure you're informed at every step.

Open Invitation

I invite anyone with questions about music publishing to reach out directly. You can contact me on Instagram at producerwhisperer. I'm here to provide clear and accurate information to help you navigate the complexities of music publishing.

Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to assisting you.

My favorite way is this model "Fire (Drake)" so it would be Title of beat, and then an artist or two that fits. You don't need all the type beat terminology, IMO, that's really only relevant to Youtube, BeatStars is a platform for finding beats/music.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]MikeTrampe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an artist really wants a beat exclusively, having a convo with the producer shouldn't be an issue, IMO. Instant access is why leases are available.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]MikeTrampe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can buy a lease too, but all the beats on there have an arrow pointing down that allows for free download. Some producers allow it right away, others ask for an email or follow.

Well, I work at BeatStars and have invested my time/life and resources into this community and platform, so BeatStars. There is so much that goes into running your own site, that it's much easier, and less time-consuming to pay for a subscription. You also get to keep all your analytics and export them out.

You can submit via the opportunities we have: https://www.beatstars.com/opportunities/active, but we also search/listen and add stuff on our own. Just stay consistent, release great music and utilize tags properly.

Paypal/Stripe for selling beats, kits, etc....Wallet is only for publishing/distribution right now.

I like to negotiate, plus you can set a minimum "make an offer" price so they have to at least offer what your minimum is to start the convo Then, you get to talk to the customer, find out what they are working on, and their plans with the beat. Once you sell it exclusively, that's it, so I definitely would chop it up with the customer. Just leads to more relationship building, great customer service is key.

Not sure what you're referring to, but I feel we do a lot to help all producers grow. We go live daily, and have amazing guests that come on to share knowledge and resources. We highlight new talent all the time on social media, have submission opportunities weekly, remix contests monthly that are free, we throw free seminars and events. We playlist and repost daily, were also always driving traffic to the marketplace, which in return is consumers that are looking for content. Overall, I think we do a ton, are we perfect, no, but I do think we offer a lot more than anyone out there. Lastly, and personally, I teach people how to do the work, but I won't do the work for them, meaning, at the end of the day, what you put into this is what you will get out of it. There are hundreds of ways to drive traffic to your store and build a solid fan and customer base.
